Happy 🇨🇰

This year’s Cook Islands Māori Language Week theme is “Me kite koe i te tuatua i to’ou reo tupuna, e turanga rangatira tena nō’ou no te uki amuri atu,” which means, “With our language as our foundation, we will embrace the future.”

To celebrate, we’re honoring the legendary Rahui Vaka, also known as Brother Love, a pioneering force in Cook Islands music. Through his unique blend of ukulele and blues, he helped revolutionize the sound of Cook Islands music and inspired generations of Pacific artists.

Beyond his music, Brother Love has shared powerful words of wisdom about the importance of hearing our music in our own tongues. As Pacific people, learning and embracing the many languages across our islands allows us to better understand, preserve, and celebrate the diverse cultures that make our Moana so rich.

Watch his acclaimed performance of “Ruketekete Te Mamae” from the 2017 Pacific Music Awards, where he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Meitaki ma’ata to Rahui Vaka (Brother Love) for his incredible contributions to Cook Islands music, Pacific culture, and the generations who continue to carry our languages and stories forward. 🇨🇰🎶
