Europa Editions is an independent publisher of quality fiction. The company was founded in 2005 by Sandro Ferri and Sandra Ozzola Ferri, who are also the owners and publishers of the Italian press, Edizioni E/O. The idea behind the creation of Europa Editions was to capitalize on Edizioni E/O’s deep roots in European publishing to bring fresh international voices to the American and British market

s and to provide quality editions that have a distinct look and consistently high levels of editorial standards. The Europa catalog is eclectic, reflecting the founders’ belief that dialogue between nations and cultures is of vital importance and that this exchange is facilitated by literature chosen not only for its ability to entertain and fascinate but also to inform and enlighten. In 2013, the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association awarded Europa Editions its Paperback publication of the Year award. Europa’s New York office is directed by Editor-in-chief Michael Reynolds. Europa Editions’ London office is directed by Daniela Petracco. In North America, we are distributed by Penguin Random House and Penguin Random House Canada. and Ireland, we are distributed by Turnaround Publisher Services. Notable successes at Europa include: Muriel Barbery’s The Elegance of the Hedgehog (translated by Alison Anderson), which spent almost a year on the New York Times Bestseller list and the IndieBound bestseller list; Jane Gardam’s Old Filth, named a notable book of the year by the New York Times; Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels, including My Brilliant Friend, a New York Times bestseller; and, Alina Bronsky’s The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine (translated by Tim Mohr), a Publishers Weekly, Wall Street Journal and San Francisco Chronicle favorite read of the year in 2011. Europa Editions publishes about thirty-five titles a year. In its first ten years, the company has published books by authors from twenty-six different countries, making it one of the leading US publishers of international fiction. In a 2013 interview in the Italian industry periodical Leggere:tutti, founder Sandro Ferri said the company was “born with the intention to create bridges between cultures.” Among authors published by Europa, Europa counts two ABA IndieBound bestsellers, four New York Times bestsellers, three Booker Prize-shortlisted novels, five New York Times Editors' Picks, three New York Times Notable Books of the Year, two Goncourt Prize winners, one German Book Prize winner, and two winners of The Strega Prize for Fiction. Among this team are also the interns, for many of whom Europa is their first introduction to the publishing world. We talked to some former interns (and one former sales manager!) from over the years about their experiences at the company to get an inside scoop on Europa’s twenty years.

Thank you to Acadia Klepeis, Mary Noorlander, Christian Westermann, Katie Black, Kaitlin Astrella, and Jennifer Herrera!

2008: in the midst of the most significant financial crisis since the Great Depression, Europa Editions publishes THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG, a French novel by Muriel Barberry about an unlikely friendship between Paloma, a precocious 12-year-old girl, and Renée, the cantankerous concierge in her Parisian apartment building. Readers across the country fall hard for this story. Since its original publication in 2008, THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG has sold nearly 1 million copies.

But before it could be published in the US, THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG had to be translated from French into English. Alison Anderson undertook this project, and we spoke with her about that process.

To celebrate 20 years, we decided to ask some of our wonderful authors about what makes Europa so special. First up is Amara Lakhous, whose novel CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS OVER AN ELEVATOR IN PIAZZA VITTORIO published in 2008 and has recently been reissued as one of our Special 20th Anniversary Editions!

Amara Lakhous was born in Algiers in 1970. He holds a degree in philosophy from the University of Algiers and another in cultural anthropology from the Sapienza Università di Roma. He recently completed a Ph.D. thesis entitled “Living Islam as a Minority.” His first novel, Le cimici e il pirata (Bedbugs and the Pirate), was published in 1999. A year after the success of THE DAYS OF ABANDONMENT, Europa brought out its first big original English language title in 2006: Jane Gardam’s OLD FILTH.

Borrowing from biography and history, OLD FILTH is a modern classic and a literary masterpiece that retraces much of the twentieth century.

Interested in Jane Gardam’s other books? Born in 1920s England, Jane Gardam was a prolific writer who lived a long and distinguished literary life. The recipient of numerous prizes and awards, she was the author of over twenty works of fiction, including Old Filth and its sequels, THE MAN IN THE WOODEN HAT and LAST FRIENDS, as well as her works for children. Some of our other favorites include THE PEOPLE ON PRIVILEGE HILL, BILGEWATER, and THE STORIES OF JANE GARDAM.

Swipe through to discover more of her books and find the anniversary edition of OLD FILTH at the link in our bio!

This year we celebrate our 20th year of bringing the best international voices to American readers. Over the next weeks, we’ll be taking you on a tour of Europa’s history with 20 social media posts. In this one, we look back on some of our favorite moments from the past twenty years.

Edizioni E/O was founded in Italy in the 1970s by Sandro Ferri and Sandra Ozzola amidst political turmoil in an effort to foster connection through literature.

Some decades later, in 2005, Europa Editions was born to continue this mission as an independent publishing house of international literature based in the US. Our first book, THE DAYS OF ABANDONMENT by Elena Ferrante, published in September 2005.

Since the beginning, we’ve been committed to publishing the best writing, whether American or international, in English or from translation.
