Europa Editions is an independent publisher of quality fiction. The company was founded in 2005 by Sandro Ferri and Sandra Ozzola Ferri, who are also the owners and publishers of the Italian press, Edizioni E/O. The idea behind the creation of Europa Editions was to capitalize on Edizioni E/O’s deep roots in European publishing to bring fresh international voices to the American and British market

s and to provide quality editions that have a distinct look and consistently high levels of editorial standards. The Europa catalog is eclectic, reflecting the founders’ belief that dialogue between nations and cultures is of vital importance and that this exchange is facilitated by literature chosen not only for its ability to entertain and fascinate but also to inform and enlighten. In 2013, the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association awarded Europa Editions its Paperback publication of the Year award. Europa’s New York office is directed by Editor-in-chief Michael Reynolds. Europa Editions’ London office is directed by Daniela Petracco. In North America, we are distributed by Penguin Random House and Penguin Random House Canada. and Ireland, we are distributed by Turnaround Publisher Services. Four volumes. One book.

10 years after its conclusion, we are proud to publish My Brilliant Friend: The Four Volumes, a deluxe edition of Elena Ferrante’s beloved Neapolitan Quartet.

This is the form in which Ferrante intended the story of Lila and Lenù to be read: as one single work of fiction, an expansive novel charting a complex and life-changing friendship that spans decades of social, political, and cultural change.

This edition gives the quartet a colorful upgrade: featuring a beautiful clothbound hardcover with sprayed edges and colored endpapers illustrating the Bay of Naples. The cover lets Ferrante’s writing speak for itself.

AMANDA is out today! 💟

Author H.S. Cross returns to post-WWI England with a historical novel that is at once an erotic drama and a formally inventive romantic epic. Among the cobbled streets and barely-lit pubs of Oxford, Marion seeks refuge from Galway and her elopement to a violent man—and it’s here that she finds Jamie, a damaged soul like her who is struggling to recover from his experiences at the front.

Their love is wild, anarchic, and absolute—a lifeline that is, however, not without its own dark forces.

Like Wuthering Heights and Madame Bovary, AMANDA is a poignant and atmospheric meditation on love, trauma, and redemption.

“H.S. Cross’s AMANDA is a historical romance of a grand, old-fashioned and very British variety….Much like love itself, reading about Jamie and Marion’s journeys back to each other is both a thrilling and maddening pursuit.” — The New York Times Book Review

Congratulations to Andrew Miller, whose novel THE LAND IN WINTER has been shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize! 🎉

The story follows neighboring women Irene and Rita, who forge an unexpected friendship deep in the British countryside during a harsh December in 1962. As a connection between the two sparks, the blustering winter season whirls through the fields around them, and the desires of their husbands splinter the intimacies of their marriages.

A page-turning novel on the intricacies of the human heart, we are thrilled to publish this book on November 4.

Stefano Benni, one of Italy’s foremost novelists known for his trademark mix of social satire and magical realism, passed away this Tuesday at the age of 78.

Benni’s books were bestsellers in his home country, and Europa Editions was proud to publish two of them in English: MARGHERITA DOLCE VITA, a fantastical story about a young girl and her eccentric family and neighbors, and TIMESKIPPER, a coming-of-age-story following a young boy who is gifted the ability to see into the future while living in the revolutionary present of 1960s and 70s Italy.

Both novels were translated from Italian into English by Antony Shugaar, who wrote in tribute to the author,

“Benni was a magician of the written word… A master at improv, Benni could conjure multitudes out of the everyday. Italy will miss him, and so will I.”

As part of our anniversary celebration, we’re especially proud to spotlight the work of Tim Mohr, a translator who worked with Europa on several books before his passing earlier this year.

For Europa, Tim translated seven novels by Alina Bronsky, including THE HOTTEST DISHES OF THE TARTAR CUISINE, Europa’s 100th book published in 2011. Tim’s dedication to bringing undiscovered female writing from German to English readers illustrates Tim’s remarkable vision for championing voices outside the mainstream, to expand and diversify our notion of world literature.

Before working as a translator, Tim “earned a living working as a club DJ in Berlin,” his biography for Europa notes. It's safe to say that Tim found himself at home off the beaten path, collaborating on memoirs with cool kids of rock n’ roll like Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses and Paul Stanley, the frontman of Kiss, and also completing jazz poet Gil Scott-Heron’s unfinished memoir. Tim's talent and achievement as a writer is most evident in his book, Burning Down the Haus, a vivid history on East German Punk and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

It’s this mix of influences, rock and punk, the underground and the literary, that allowed Tim to build a truly unique and collaborative body of work.

Tim is fondly remembered and deeply missed in both his professional and personal communities. Europa is proud to have had the chance to work with Tim. You can learn more about Tim's life and work at the link in our bio.

Happy pub day to THE WOMAN DIES by Aoko Matsuda, translated by Polly Barton!

This collection of fifty-two short stories and pieces of flash fiction takes as its impetus the various forms of discrimination entrenched within Japanese society, particularly the long, stubborn roots of sexism. Blending surrealism, horror, and social critique, Matsuda conveys hard-hitting feminist stances with a dry, detached humor that makes them all the more uncompromising.

Not so much a rollercoaster ride, rather an entire theme park, The Woman Dies is an out-of-the ordinary space readers will step into with feelings of wonder and discombobulation in equal parts.

★ “Matsuda’s brilliant, biting imagination moves effortlessly between quirky and devastating, farcical and breathtaking, poised to charm and shock readers.” – Booklist (starred review)

It all started with THE DAYS OF ABANDONMENT.

In 2005, Europa published its first book: THE DAYS OF ABANDONMENT by then-unknown Italian author Elena Ferrante. It was a hit.

“Just as Ferrante drew an indelible portrait of female friendship in her quartet of Neapolitan novels, here, she brings her all-seeing eye to female solitude.”---The New York Times, a Best Book of the 20th Century

Since the beginning, Europa has brought literature from around the world to countless readers, and brought otherwise unknown books, authors, and stories into the spotlight. We’re proud to be able to continue that tradition today.

20 years of inspiring connection across cultures through literature. 20 years of publishing quality literature from around the world.

Swipe through to take a look at some of our favorite moments from the past 20 years.

Thank you for celebrating our anniversary with us!

It’s hard to believe that Anne Berest’s THE POSTCARD was published just two years ago, in 2023! This poignant family saga and work of historical fiction immediately found its way into the hearts of readers.

In 2003, an anonymous postcard is delivered to the Berest family home. On the front, a photo of the Opéra Garnier in Paris. On the back, the names of Anne Berest’s maternal great-grandparents, Ephraïm and Emma, and their children, Noémie and Jacques—all killed at Auschwitz. Years after the postcard is delivered, the heroine of this novel is moved to discover who sent it and why.

THE POSTCARD is now part of our 20th anniversary collection. Anne Berest is also the author of GABRIELE with her sister, Claire. To celebrate our 20 years, we asked Anne Berest about what makes Europa special. Hear what she has to say on slide 2!

And don’t miss our conversation with Tina Kover, the translator of THE POSTCARD! Find it in our Instagram feed or on our newsletter
