IN THIS VOLUME: The mass is ended by Catherine Dunne and Caelainn Hogan ・ The Way Back by Colum McCann ・ A Trip to Westeros by Mark O’Connell ・ plus: life on the margins of two unions and right in the middle of Brexit, making war on each other for 30 years while playing on the same national rugby team, emigrating to the great enemy or transforming the country one referendum at a time, digging peat bogs and building cottages, talking of the sea in Gaelic, and much more…

HEAVEN shortlisted for the International Booker Prize!⁣ ✨

Huge congratulations to author Mieko Kawakami (@kawakami_mieko) and translators Sam Bett (@sambett) and David Boyd!⁣

The #InternationalBookerPrize is awarded annually for a single book, translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland. The £50,000 prize money is divided equally between the author and translator.⁣

According to this year’s prize judges Frank Wynne, Merve Emre, Petina Gappah, Viv Groskop and Jeremy Tiang, “HEAVEN uses its tale of middle-school bullying to enact Nietzsche’s critique of morality. The power of Sam Bett and David Boyd’s translation lies in its ability to communicate both Mieko Kawakami’s abstract, philosophical ideas and her harrowing human drama.”⁣

The winner will be announced on May 26.⁣

ALL THE LOVERS IN THE NIGHT made the Indie Next List!⁣ ❤️‍🔥

The new novel by international bestselling author Mieko Kawakami (@kawakami_mieko), translated from the Japanese by Sam Betts (@sambett) and David Boyd, is an Indie Next List Pick for May 2022!⁣

One of the most anticipated books of 2022, ALL THE LOVERS IN THE NIGHT invites readers back into Mieko Kawakami’s immediately recognizable fictional world, demonstrating yet again why she is one of today’s most uncategorizable, insightful, and talented novelists. ⁣

Acute and insightful, entertaining and engaging, this new, extraordinary novel will make readers laugh, and it will make them cry, but it will also remind them, as only the best books do, that sometimes the pain is worth it.⁣

“In the skilled hands of Bett and Boyd, Kawakami’s prose is instantly recognizable—immediate, incisive, and unfailingly honest.”—Katie Kitamura, 𝘌𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘞𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘭𝘺 (A Most Anticipated Book of 2022)⁣

“Her most accomplished novel yet…A contemporary Japanese master continues her meteoric rise into our literary firmament.”—Hamilton Cain, 𝘖𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘩 𝘋𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘺 (A Most Anticipated Book of 2022)⁣

THE DOLPHIN HOUSE by Audrey Schulman is out today! 🐬

Based on the true story of the 1965 “dolphin house” experiment, this spellbinding novel captures the tenor of the social experiments of the 1960s in award-winning author Audrey Schulman’s tightly paced and evocative style.⁣

It is 1965, and Cora, a young, hearing impaired woman, buys a one-way ticket to the island of St. Thomas, where she discovers four dolphins held in captivity as part of an experiment led by the obsessive Dr. Blum. ⁣

Recognizing Cora’s knack for communication, Blum uses her for what will turn into one of the most fascinating experiments in modern science: an attempt to teach the dolphins human language by creating a home in which she and a dolphin can live together.⁣

★ “Schulman builds a lovely picture of the growth of mutual trust and enjoyment among the dolphins and Cora... Both woman and dolphins come to vivid life in this fascinating and beautifully realized novel.”—𝘒𝘪𝘳𝘬𝘶𝘴 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘴 (Starred Review)⁣

“Engrossing... As with Ms. Schulman’s outstanding 2018 novel Theory of Bastards, the frisson of The Dolphin House comes when it turns the methods of rigorous observation on its humans.”—Sam Sacks, 𝘞𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭⁣

This INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that REMOTE SYMPATHY by Catherine Chidgey has been Longlisted for The Women’s Prize for Fiction @womensprize 📚⁣

REMOTE SYMPATHY is a book of devastating beauty, set during the Second World War. A tour de force about the evils of obliviousness, the novel compels us to question our continuing and wilful ability to look the other way in a world that is once more in thrall to the idea that everything—even facts, truth and morals—is relative.⁣

“A powerful and disturbing study in terrible lies and the human need to believe them. Few readers will close this book unshaken.”—Annie Proulx⁣

“Immersive, profound, and beautifully plotted.”—𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘯⁣

New from Elena Ferrante—invaluable insights into the craft of a master. “[l]n these four crisp essays, Ferrante offers a rare look at the origins of her literary powers. She writes about her influences, her struggles, and her formation as both a reader and a writer; she describes the perils of “bad language” and suggests ways in which it has long excluded women’s truth; she proposes a choral fusion of feminine talent as she brilliantly discourses on the work of Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, Ingeborg Bachmann, and many others.” Must-read non-fiction from one of Novel Idea’s favourite novelists, published by Europa Editions and available (of course) right here!
Join us for the first of our Compass Conversations series, presented in partnership with Europa Editions. Elena Ferrante could write a long-form essay about making toast for breakfast, and I would want to read it. So, it was a pleasant bonus when Europa Editions (via Allen & Unwin Books) sent me In The Margins, a collection of her essays about topics I happen to love – reading and writing. ✍️✍️✍️/5
