It’s 1963, and the Waltons are going to have one last Thanksgiving at the old house on Walton’s Mountain. With building to soon commence on a new, smaller house, John (Ralph Waite) and Livvie (Michael Learned) are worried that they haven’t had any contact with globe-hopping Elizabeth (Kami Cotler), who’s celebrating earning that Botany Masters by traveling through Europe, collecting weeds. Real John-Boy (Richard Thomas), now a workaholic newscaster in NYC, wants to bring home his chic new girlfriend, magazine editor Janet Gilchrist (Kate McNeil). She, however, has doubts about his ability to settle down and start a family.
Erin (Mary Beth McDonough), now divorced, is trying to raise her three kids alone, with the help of Cindy Walton (Leslie Winston), who lost her daughter 2 years before (didn’t they have a son, too?), while Cindy’s husband Ben (Eric Scott), is having difficulty being a junior partner in the lumber business with the increasingly scrappy John Sr.. Mary Ellen (Judy Norton), now a doctor, is overly protective of her child Clay (um…what happened to John-Curtis?), while Corabeth Godsey (Ronnie Claire Edwards) is on the outs with her daughter, Aimee (Rachel Longaker). Jim-Bob (David Harper) is flying planes and living at the airport, while Jason (Jon Walmsley) is on the road, touring with a band, while his wife Toni (Lisa Harrison) is saddled with three kids…and a fourth on the way. With everyone so scattered, it will take a momentous event—like the assassination of JFK—to bring the Waltons all together this holiday season.

The next stop on our Warner Brothers backlot journey is the Walton barn. Unlike the exterior house set, the barn was a "practical" set, which means the interior space was used for filming. Unlike the interior sets, the barn had a ceiling and the walls weren't moveable. In this photo, you can see the exterior house set through the open barn door. We usually entered and exited the barn through the big doors, but I believe there was also a way out the back. I know the barn roof extended over the mill area and I think there was an opening from the barn to the mill and then you could access the smokehouse, which also had a usable interior space, and was located directly behind the barn. The barn was a good place to play. There was a hayloft to climb into, all kinds of weird farming equipment, and hay.

I remember one day feeling sorry for the chickens having to live on the hard ground. I carried armloads of hay from the barn to the chicken coop, so they would have a softer surface. I think I started by filling the wooden chicken house with hay and then I put down a good 6 to 12 inches of hay across the entire pen. Leon, the prop man was horrified when he saw it. Of course, he understood the coop needed to look the same, so it would match when they filmed it. He stopped my work and set about carrying all the hay back to the barn. This story shows me just how free our free time was on set. I often found excellent ways to entertain myself, and I felt quite safe wandering all over.

Tomorrow, I'll explore what was behind the barn and house. See less

The Walton family is returning to TV again in A Waltons Thanksgiving, a follow-up to 2021’s The Waltons’ Homecoming, a film on The CW which marked the 50th anniversary of the TV movie that sparked The Waltons back in 1971.
The series, an Emmy-winning CBS historical drama about a Depression-era family in rural Virginia, ultimately aired nine seasons between 1972 and 1981. But the show’s popularity was so enduring that the cast reunited for six TV movies between 1982 and 1997. This latest film celebrates the 50th anniversary of when The Waltons series began in 1972.

The Walton house, sawmill, barn all sat together in the northeast corner of the Warner Brothers' backlot. Look at "A" on the diagram I posted yesterday, and you'll see that a suburban street, concealed by a rise and foliage, ran behind the house. When Judy interviewed John Dayton, who was a production assistant, he shared that a man living on that street would routinely start mowing his lawn when we filmed, and John would be tasked with slipping him a little cash to stop the noise. When filming outdoors takes were often ruined by noise, jets flying overhead, sirens, etc. Lighting was harder, too. Counterintuitively, sunny days required additional lights to balance the brightness of foreground and background. Clouds were a menace, since they could suddenly cast a shadow. I can remember standing on set, looking up at smallish cloud blocking the sun, while the Director of Photography and his crew decided whether it made more sense to relight or just wait for the cloud to pass. Working outside also meant was also more challenging because the ground was uneven and sometimes a plywood track needed to be laid and leveled if the director wanted the camera to move along the ground. Today's Steadicams and similar technology means that isn't needed any more.
