While some may say summer is almost over, others will suggest there are more than enough weeks left of this decadent season. And you can count me firmly in the latter camp.

This has been my first summer fully back in the States since relocating from the UK last September, and while it flew by, I had an absolute blast, and that wasn't just because of the glorious air conditioning.

But besides that joyous perk, it was the first summer in a long damn time where I took a lot of exhales, danced with a lot of strangers (including a few sweet Marines), took long walks in New York, didn't always care about saying exactly the right thing and was okay with pronouncing things incorrectly, while also making choices that I know others would disapprove of.

It's a learning curve, and when so many corners of our world seem hyper-focused on looking perfect and being performative, it's been liberating AF getting to escape that motorway and ending up on a much-needed detour.

What is something you're letting go of or bringing on with full-force excitement? 😍

As we dive into the last few weeks of summer, I know everyone (myself included) is jonesing to soak up the last bit of sunshine and one more book before back-to-school season arrives. After sharing a few of my fave summer reads lately, I thought I’d also spill the tea here.

1. Nora "The Queen" Ephron: I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman

If you’re cool being the gal giggling to yourself at the pool, then this is the read for you. This book of essays talks about the joys and pitfalls of getting older and will have you nodding from the first page to the last. It's honest, clever, and f*cking hilarious.

2. Mary S. Lovell: The Riviera Set: Glitz, Glamour, and the Hidden World of High Society

If you're craving a dollop of history with your Aperol, this is a perfect pick. At 448 pages, it's a longer read and perfect for extended stays at a Tuscan farmhouse or a far-flung escape with little on the agenda beyond the occasional swim.

It tells the story of Maxine Elliott, a glamorous American actress who built the Château de l'Horizon in Vallauris on the French Riviera with her famous friends in tow, including the likes of Noël Coward, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Winston Churchill.

3. Françoise Sagan: Bonjour Tristesse

A short and delicious read. This coming-of-age story is about seventeen-year-old Cécile and her summer in the French Riviera… I’ll leave it at that; just take my word for it.

4. Elizabeth Beller: Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Sunita Kumar Nair: CBK: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy: A Life in Fashion

Beller’s take on CBK is detailed, nuanced, and beautifully told. When I first read this book last summer, I couldn’t put it down and was actually a bit melancholy when I finished.

And when you finish Beller's story, pick up CBK, a minimalist (and thoroughly on-brand) coffee-table book you'll want to keep in your living room and flip through as temperatures take a dip for inspiration for your autumnal wardrobe.

This summer I’m trying something different… to be a little less curated, to stop being so finicky, to be less performative, to focus less on trying to get everything right. And to be a little less like my beloved Elaine.💃🏻

And, dear golly these few months have been brimming with so many unexpected delights that I still keep getting surprised. 💗✨🐛🌴✈️😳🤯🫶🫀🫦👩🏻‍🎤

What’s something you’re toying with this summer?!?!?!? No wrong answers.

Could it be mercury retrograde? Could it be the sweaty sports summer? Or the fervent desire for the more simplistic times of the 90s-early 2000s? Whatever it is… 🤭 I’m giggling all around with my middle and high school crushes resurfacing like it’s Ben and Liv’s last days together in Armageddon. Or it’s a 1990s summer ❤️‍🔥

Hooray for solo dining! While I’ve certainly seen many distinguished gentleman-looking types eating solo over the years, it’s only been the last handful of months where I’ve seen more young women dining on their own, swimming in those cool and confident vibes. It’s been such magic to witness more women treating themselves to all those scrumptious meals (hello, Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice at Momoya in Soho).

Even the great Gayle King once remarked on CBS Mornings about feeling a bit awkward when eating alone in a restaurant. If I remember the segment correctly, she was quietly reading her book while dining solo, only for a server to politely lean in and let her know she was holding her book upside down because she felt a bit off kilter. But the thing about dining solo is that no one really cares as much as you think they do.

Don’t get me wrong, there were a few situations with one many, many moons ago where a trio of women snickered in my direction, but I wasn’t going to let some gossip in a shopping mall sushi restaurant stop me from dining out. In fact, after the pandemic, I doubled down and took myself out to as many restaurants as I could, including Nobu Portman Square the moment indoor dining restrictions were lifted. My server remarked, “I would never let my wife dine out by herself...” so I did what any self-respecting independent woman would do and responded with more courtesy than he deserved, and ordered black cod and a second glass of V***e.

And since that evening, it’s been such a joy taking myself out on solo Jen dates, whether that was in my old city of London and New York, or farther afield at ridiculously romantic restaurants in Malta and Oman, or travelling for work in Paris before hopping on the Eurostar with Céline the Poo. In fact, many of the best meals I’ve ever indulged in have been on my own, and quite frankly, life is far too short not to eat the damn good food whether with company or solo. Bon appétit! 🥑🍜🥘🥕🥟🦐🍇🍲🌮🍘🍙🍱🥨🌯🍛🍣
