SAME OLE JETS? NOT QUITE… ✈️

Everyone is upset about the missed opportunity to start 2-0, and I get it. But I think Jets fans are missing the bigger picture and forgetting just how bad last year really was.

We watched a team that looked ready for relegation last season, playing some of the worst football in franchise history.

Remember Week 2 last season? The Bills dropped 403 yards on the Jets in a 30-10 smack to the face. The Bills ran for over 200 yards and more than doubled New York in first downs.

The Jets didn’t get embarrassed by Green Bay. They took them to overtime after leading 17-7 in the fourth quarter. Through two games, the defense has allowed just 394 TOTAL YARDS.

Buffalo had 403 by itself in Week 2 last year.

That’s not “Same Ole Jets.”

There are problems, though.

The offensive line failed its first major test. The Jets couldn’t move Green Bay’s front, Breece Hall was held to 29 rushing yards, and Geno Smith had to throw 41 times.

Then there’s the elephant in the room: 13 penalties for 156 yards.

Yes, Green Bay was heavily penalized too, but the Jets aren’t established enough yet to consistently survive that many self-inflicted wounds.

Geno through two games:

46/65 | 70.8% | 462 yards | ZERO INTs

That’s competent veteran quarterback play. The defense is keeping games within reach. The Jets are sustaining drives and finding themselves in manageable situations.

This wasn’t a Super Bowl roster expected to roll into September and dominate Green Bay. This was a team trying to take the next step in player development, become competent again and compete for four quarters every Sunday.

So far? That’s exactly what we’re seeing.

The Green Bay loss SHOULD sting because they had them.

Now comes the next stage: learning how to finish.

With Detroit and Chicago ahead, opportunities are there if the Jets continue improving and clean up the mistakes.

It’s going to take time for this team to learn how to consistently close games.

But after two weeks, there’s one thing I’m not buying:

These are the same Jets we watched last year.

They’re not.

Are we surprised?

As a Jet fan watching this game I knew exactly what was going to happen, while people are starting the “ Fire Glenn” chants two weeks in, I decided to take a different approach.

See I came into this season with no expectations because last season was the worst Jet team I ever watched week in and week out. I was impressed with the offseason but still this is the Jets…

After week 1, I was thrilled. I saw was a young team, playing scrappy defense and a competent veteran who can move the ball down the field at times and an offensive line with a push upfront. Paired with a solid defense I was excited for week 2.

What I didn’t expect week 2 was a team that controlled most of the game IMO and a defense that seems to have found its footing yet again.

Look this is a young team with a lot of moving parts that are new and to be honest did you expect the Jets to be 1-0 in overtime fighting for 2-0? In the offseason? You certainly did not.

Besides the Glenn clock management there were players who played in this game, the Jets lost their first test upfront and didn’t come up with the same pop as week 1, this led to Geno having to throw 40 plus times which is not the recipe. This offense isn’t seasoned enough for that, it’s one dimensional ball and we aren’t fooling anyone.

The play calling never adjusted in the second half to the pressure and didn’t dial enough screens to keep the pack honest.

What I did like was Geno again gave us a shot, Mitchell is growing as a Legit 2, the defense looks to be solid and to me the Jets as we speak right now are ahead of schedule to what I saw last season and fans need to settle down, take a deep breath and smile.

This team will win more and they have three first round picks. You’re allowed to grow as a team everything isn’t 0-100 and these guys can’t carry the last 16 years on their back.

Jets Guru Keys to the game

- Slow it Down

The Jets must run the ball consistently this is key, more than ever. Green Bay will look to start fast coming off last week. Set the tempo. You know Geno can sling it, don’t force the ball. Get mean, use your backs.

I think the Jets and Glenn start imposing that ground will he learned in Detroit, Jets are more than capable.

While I say this, the Jets still have to be aggressive at times to keep the defense honest, we have the speed and Qb to do so.

- follow the plan of the Vikings

In the second half of week one Green Bay struggled with the blitz and so did the offensive line, Jets have some young speed and Glenn like to blitz. Get after it and force turnovers.

Expect Breece Hall, Adonai Mitchell and Bailey to have big impacts in this game.

Geno looked in command. Sadiq looked healthy, and Cooper showed ability after the catch before getting injured.

After a solid opening stand, Stiggers made a heads-up special teams play, driving his blocker into the return man. Fans wanted a flag, but Stiggers never touched him—his own teammate did. Brains.

The Jets front was solid, constantly in Ward’s face and forcing him out of the pocket. Most of his early success came scrambling and extending drives, though he made one great throw to rookie Carnell Tate under heavy pressure up the middle on, guess who? Stephens.

Braelon Allen came out in the second and SMASHED Tennessee, building momentum. This was a true spell for Hall. Loved how he was used.

If healthy, this offensive line can be dangerous. The Jets controlled the second quarter, including an 18-play, 10-minute drive with multiple 4th-down conversions. That aggressiveness Glenn saw under Dan Campbell in Detroit has carried over.

The end of the half was ugly. Poor play selection and false starts pushed the Jets out of FG range. With no timeouts and under 20 seconds left, they came away with nothing. Against a better team, leaving 3 points off the board can cost you.

Still, a very good half.

Geno came out sharp in the 3rd with strikes to Mitchell and Wilson, capped by a Breece Hall TD. The offense looked balanced and Geno looked comfortable behind this line.

Stiggers made another big special teams play in the 4th, pinning Tennessee inside its own 5.

The Jets allowed their fewest points since Week 4 of 2024. Geno controlled the offense, and after what we’ve watched the last few years, this felt NIGHT AND DAY. It gives me some of that 2015-2016 McCown-season feeling: a veteran QB slinging it around and beating expectations.

Now Green Bay. After watching their second half, this isn’t a cakewalk for the Packers. The Jets need their A-game, clean up the mistakes and keep it close. Green Bay struggled with Minnesota’s pressure and blitzing in the second half, and that’s something these Jets can bring.

1-0. On to Green Bay.

An underrated part of this upcoming Jets season that isn’t getting nearly enough attention is the fact that Aaron Glenn will be calling the defensive plays.

There’s a reason Glenn was brought to New York. It wasn’t just because he was a former Jet who wanted an opportunity where it seemed so many others didn’t. He was brought here because of what he accomplished in Detroit and the culture he helped build on defense.

When Glenn took over as defensive coordinator in Detroit, the Lions finished 31st in points allowed in his first season. Four years later, despite dealing with injuries all over the roster, that same defense finished seventh in the NFL in points allowed, fifth against the run and first on third down.

A huge part of that was Glenn’s play calling.

For a Jets team that allowed 29.6 points per game, second worst in the NFL last season, Glenn needs to be involved however he can.

Last season was unacceptable.

The Jets forced just four turnovers all season, all of them fumble recoveries, and somehow didn’t record a single interception, becoming the first team in the Super Bowl era to finish a season without one. Opposing quarterbacks threw 36 touchdown passes against them and posted a 110.9 passer rating.

Over his final two seasons with the Lions, his defenses consistently got off the field on third down, stopped the run, created takeaways and frustrated opposing quarterbacks. Even while dealing with injuries, Detroit became one of the NFL’s toughest defenses to play against because of the intensity and confidence Glenn coached with.

That’s the version of Aaron Glenn the Jets are hoping to get now that he’s taking over play-calling duties. As a defensive coordinator, you can get four years to build something…not head coach with limited growth.

If the Jets look anything like they did last season, I don’t think Woody Johnson is going to be patient simply because a rookie quarterback could be waiting in the wings.

If play calling really is his superpower, we’re about to find out just how much of Detroit he can bring to New York.

Who is Geno Smith?

It sounds like a strange question, but it’s the one Jets fans should be asking.

The first version of Geno Smith we saw in New York was talented, confident, and armed with one of the strongest throws in his class. He also wasn’t ready. Immaturity and inconsistency kept him from becoming the franchise quarterback many hoped he’d be, talent kept him in the league.

After leaving the Jets, Geno spent three years in the background with the Giants, Chargers, and Seahawks. Most quarterbacks disappear after that. Geno didn’t.

Over three seasons as the Seahawks’ starter, he threw for nearly 12,000 yards, 71 touchdowns, and just 35 interceptions, finally becoming the steady, poised quarterback many believed he could be.

Last season with the Raiders wasn’t pretty, but context matters. Las Vegas struggled on the offensive line, lacked consistency around him, and had issues across the roster. That wasn’t all on Geno and his numbers still were better than anything we’ve seen recently in NY.

So what version are the Jets getting?

The supporting cast is stronger than what he had in Las Vegas. Hall can take pressure off the passing game, Garrett Wilson is an elite target and additions like Cooper and Saddiq give the offense more ways to attack. If the offensive line holds up, Geno can still spin it.

The biggest key isn’t whether Geno can read defenses or make NFL throws. He’s proven he can. It’s protection, timing, and giving him answers when pressure comes.

3,500 to 3,800 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions is where I see Geno putting up.

Those aren’t MVP numbers, but they don’t need to be.

The Jets need stability. They have been a disaster we could use Geno the next two years, keep the team competitive, and give the next young quarterback time to develop instead of throwing him into the fire. We shouldn’t see Klubnik or the next draft pick until the last 2-3 games of the season.

Sometimes solid quarterback play is exactly what a franchise needs not place holders like Tyrod but a veteran who can still sling it a bit.

I see a sharper Geno, Let’s hope I’m right…
