10.A surprising number of The Far Side comics involve characters facing certain doom. Whether people are dealing with ghosts and monsters or about to step off a cliff, Gary Larson never shied away from dark humor. Sometimes he took the joke too far, but more often than not, he stuck the landing.
In this strip, two people are about to fall into the mouth of a hungry alligator, but one of them thinks she has a solution: a belly rub. It seems ridiculous, but things tend to work a little strangely in The Far Side. Who knows? Maybe this gator is actually just trying to get a little affection.

10 The Most Hilarious The Far Side Comics Published In 1982, Ranked
9.This hilarious Far Side strip proves that not every comic needs a punchline. Even though the strip doesn’t have any words, Gary Larson has told a complete story. A birdwatcher is peering at a feathered creature through binoculars, but the bird is watching back, and based on the look on its face, it’s hungry.
While the bird’s facial expression is already laugh-out-loud funny, there are lots of little details here that make the comic more interesting. The bird’s nest is filled with binoculars and tattered clothes, and based on how tiny everything looks, it seems like the creature is absolutely massive. In The Far Side, even activities like watching birds can be dangerous business.

8.Gary Larson loved to crack jokes about aliens, and this silly strip proves that even extraterrestrials can have bad days. There’s a group of humans in the distance excitedly pointing at a UFO, but they’re not the focus of the story here. Instead, this Far Side comic is about an alien who appears to have locked his keys in his spaceship.
Based on the way the people are pointing, they’re probably not planning on offering any lockpicking assistance, but maybe they’ll be able to give the aliens a helping hand once they find out what's going on. The next time these extraterrestrials visit Earth, they should probably bring a set of spare keys.

10 The Most Hilarious The Far Side Comics Published In 1982, Ranked
7.Folklore about baby teeth has been around for centuries. In the Middle Ages, children were told to burn their teeth so they wouldn’t have to look for them in the afterlife. Around the turn of the 20th century, the legend of the tooth fairy, who left kids gifts in exchange for their baby teeth, arose.
This Far Side comic is about the tooth fairy, but there are no teeth involved. Instead, the fairy seems to have taken off with this kid’s nose. To add insult to injury, the fairy only left him a quarter. This comic may have been published in the ‘80s, but that doesn’t seem like a fair trade.

6.All kinds of things are lurking in the water, especially in a place like The Far Side. Here, a bird that appears to be a Great Egret has gone diving for fish and wound up with a mouthful of something else. It’s hard to say exactly what it is, but it appears to resemble The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
While the idea of a bird accidentally swallowing a famous monster is already pretty funny, Gary Larson’s artwork is what really makes this joke sing. The poor bird is clearly struggling to choke this monster down, and the creature looks more confused than afraid.

5.Not everyone is willing to watch movies with subtitles, but in The Far Side, dogs aren’t afraid to challenge themselves. These canines appear to be watching a fairly standard romance movie, but the dog-friendly captions manage to elevate the comic into something that’s absolutely hysterical.
Gary Larson really went the extra mile when he was writing these captions, and this comic is even more hilarious when it’s read out loud. This comic wasn't the first or the last time Larson riffed on dog speech, but it proves that the only thing funnier than a human movie with dog subtitles is a human movie dubbed in the voice of a dog.

10 The Most Hilarious The Far Side Comics Published In 1982, Ranked
4.1982 is the year The Far Side’s infamous Cow Tools strip was published, but it wasn’t the only bovine-themed joke Gary Larson told that year. Whether his comics showed cows confessing to crimes or waking up from a McDonald’s-themed nightmare, he knew that cattle were always a great source of humor.
This comic looks like it could be a scene from a thrilling courtroom drama, but replacing the human with a cow turns the whole thing into a sidesplitting farce. Legal dramas like Juror #2 don’t have anything on this Far Side strip.

3.There are numerous theories on what caused the dinosaurs to go extinct. While most experts believe that dinosaurs were wiped out by an asteroid, Gary Larson has another theory about what took these giant lizards out: ci******es.
By 1982, the dangers of ci******es were well-known, and anti-smoking campaigns were commonplace. Even though this Far Side strip is about smoking being deadly, it’s far more silly than it is preachy. The sneaky expressions on the dinosaur’s faces make them look like something out of an anti-smoking cartoon.

2.The Far Side had plenty of jokes about people stranded on deserted islands, but this 1982 comic is one of the very best. In the strip, a seemingly stranded man is about to be rescued by a passing plane, but that changes once the pilot gets close enough to see what he actually wrote: “Helf.”
It seems like the poor guy ran out of twigs, but that’s not good enough for this pilot. Once catches a glimpse of his misspelled message, he cancels the rescue plans immediately. Look, if the guy really needed help, he probably would have taken the time to make sure he spelled the word correctly.

10 The Most Hilarious The Far Side Comics Published In 1982, Ranked
1.In 1982, The Far Side had not one, but two jokes about a baby being carried away by animals. Gary Larson started off the year with a January joke where a baby gets lugged around by a chicken, but he followed that one up with something even funnier: a baby getting taken back to an anthill by an army of ants.
Apparently, babies are pretty lightweight in The Far Side, because another comic showed them getting stuck to the ceiling via static electricity. How much could a baby weigh anyway? A pound? Gary Larson wasn’t afraid to poke fun at any subject, even helpless infants, and that’s what makes The Far Side great.

10 Best The Far Side Comic Strips From The '90s, Ranked
10.Larson’s inclusion of additional parody is revealed in the first year of the decade. A spoof of the highly popular film Gorillas in the Mist provides comedy through means not typically employed by Larson. The intended joke is delivered with abundant text that imitates narration from the parodied film. Larson provides an intricately detailed illustration with a fitting atmosphere in setup and support of the gag.
For the true humor of the satire to be enjoyed, the reader must understand the referenced material. With the proper context, this perfectly crafted parody proves hilarious. Unfortunately, without the right perspective, the reader could be slightly confused by the heavy text and strange scenario involving chickens. The heavy reliance on context has this amusing entry slipping to the bottom of the rankings.

10 Best The Far Side Comic Strips From The '90s, Ranked
9.People in The Far Side encounter many oddities. Especially when concerning their pets. A sound example is when a man finds his dog typing in the basement. While the content of its work is unknown, the dialogue suggests it could contain material of a revealing nature. Questions arise regarding the dog’s speech and behavior, but perhaps a more important query is why the man’s first reaction would be laughter.
Larson’s parody of a movie and television trope contains multiple interesting techniques. The use of satire, personification and cynicism are key in creating comedy. Mystery is also present as, in typical fashion, questions remain unanswered. Each element of the illustration also adds to the reader's enjoyment. The full trash can and pillow under the dog are nice touches in Larson’s amusing spoof.
