“Organic material — food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste — make up about a third of what we throw away, but it’s not trash,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia in a statement.
“Putting your food scraps and yard waste to good use decreases the amount of garbage going to landfills and helps create a greener and healthier New York City,” she added.
The program is expanding to Long Island City, Far Rockaway and Kew Gardens, among other areas.
Koo said coordinating truck deliveries around rush hours and other peak travel times is an important element in reducing overall congestion in Flushing.
In an effort to relieve delivery traffic in Flushing, the Department of Transportation and Councilman Peter Koo (D-Flushing) teamed up for the “Smart Truck management Plan.”
All single-family homes and buildings with nine or fewer residential units in the area are automatically enrolled in the program, but participation is voluntary. Each residence will be provided with a starter kit, including an indoor kitchen container, a brown outdoor bin and an instructional brochure.
