Dear Kavanagh Productions Clients and Partners:

First, here’s hoping this message finds you well and safe. We know most of you are in the epicenter of COVID-19 infections here in the U.S., around New York City.

We trust that you have found ways to keep your families and co-workers sheltering in place and practicing good health and safety precautions and I hope these measures are working.

Here at Kavanagh Productions, we have made good steps forward to keep our operations working while sheltering at home, with our edit systems and drives, cameras and recording equipment accessible to us without traveling outside.

We’ve been completing projects throughout the last week remotely and collaborating over Zoom (video conferencing and desktop sharing app), using the internet to continue to work together.

We’re keeping in touch with clients and vendors as best as possible and hope to be helpful to you as you make the necessary adjustments to work under the present realities of life as well.

Please stay in touch with us. Let us know if you have questions. We're happy to help if you're looking for advice as to how best to record media at home or remotely, if you need help with postproduction while keeping safe, or just to say, “Hi” at this difficult and challenging moment.

Lyft will get voters to the polls with free and discounted rides

We want EVERYONE we know and work with to vote this November 6. In case you or anyone you know needs a ride (perhaps someone without a car or mass transit or who doesn’t move without assistance), pass the word that the ride app, Lyft is offering low-cost and free rides to the polls! Let your friends know in advance to download the app and use it-- or just give them a ride yourself. We can do this, people!

The ride-hailing service will provide 50% discounted rides to voters across the nation for the Nov. 6 midterm elections.

El Salvador court reopens investigation of 1989 Jesuit massacre

Our film, Enemies of War (2001) was focused around the UCA murders. While there were tens of thousands killed by death squads during the war, this crime remains a prime example of the impunity with which the oligarchy and the military operated during the 1980's in El Salvador, aided by unending dollars from U.S. Administrations.

Perhaps with the upcoming canonization of Archbishop Romero and the world's attention turned to this period, there will finally be an end to the impunity for those who ordered the murders.

A human rights attorney in the United States believes that the upcoming canonization of Blessed Oscar Romero in October has been a factor in a decision to revisit the 1989 Jesuit massacre at the University of Central America.

El Salvador Jesuits seek reopening of case in 1989 massacre

Our producer, Bill Kavanagh, worked for years as Field Producer in El Salvador and in the U.S. on "Enemies of War," a documentary on the murder of these courageous priests, their housekeeper, and her daughter. The film followed the battle to end the silence and impunity surrounding human rights violations, death squads and extra-judicial assassinations during the civil war there.

We welcome news that the case may be more openly tried in Spanish courts and hope the truth will finally be told.

We're happy to have been involved with the premiere and panels for Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's documentary series, "The Vietnam War." Directing live coverage and shooting interviews at the Kennedy Center in DC and here at Lincoln Center was an honor. Having folks like Senator John McCain as our subjects made us all the more proud to be part of the team.

We're excited to share wonderful news regarding one of our films! Rutgers Law Library has begun an exciting project. Rutgers will create an online site to share archived source material from "Brick by Brick: A Civil Rights Story."
By next year, scholars, activists, and law students will be able to look up and view source material from the US v. Yonkers struggle. Interested people will view for themselves the many hours of interviews with activists, lawyers, public officials, tenants of public housing, public hearings, City Council meetings and much more material that has never been seen before.
Cheers to Professor Elise Boddie and Associate Dean John Joergensen at the Law School, and especially to Wei Fang, the tech wizard in charge of the hard work involved!
This will be a substantial project and will take time, so we'll keep you posted via this space when there is more news.
