Musicians in Black History
James Hines of the group J. Hines & the Boys was a 6 foot 7 preacher & soul and funk guitarist out of Allendale, South Carolina.
He filled clubs and auditoriums throughout the Southeast in the 70โs & 80โs.
Making several albums that spawn singles such as "Funky Funk" and "Can't Think of Nothing (Blank Mind)."
In the 90s Hines gave up what he called an, โinstrument of sinโfinding new outlook in the church, however his pastor had Heard his recordings and convinced Hines to share his gifts once again, taking him to buy a guitar.
Eventually building a church himself & becoming a minister in the town of Allendale, a town 75 miles southwest of the capital of Columbia.
He played guitar during services and the local Christian radio station until his death from skin cancer at 60 in 2004.
At his funeral, several people, including one of Hines' five children, said the casket looked too small. Hines was 6'7 inches tall in his bare feet, according to his family.
After the funeral, the rumors began โ started, some say, by a former funeral home worker โ and it seemed as if all 3,700 people in town were talking about the burial and the fact that the undertaker had to cut off his legs to fit him in the coffin.
Ann Hines the wife of James Hines threatened to sue Cave Funeral Home and the business agreed to settle out of court as long as she did not tell anyone how much she received. She said workers at the funeral home never told her exactly what happened. She said she accepted the deal and tried to forget about the whole thing and stop wondering why nobody even apologized.
Eventually, someone called the South Carolina Board of Funeral Service, and the coroner and an investigator with the agency received the widow's permission to dig up the grave. Finding Cave Funeral Home violated funeral practices citing "undesirable evidence" was found.
