Yesterday was the busiest day for commercial aviation that we’ve ever tracked. We tracked 134,386 commercial flights on 6 July and today is shaping up to be another busy day. More than 20,000 flights are in the air right now.

TAP Air Portugal Flight 236, San Francisco to Lisbon declared an emergency tonight using code 7700 over Connecticut. The flight was cruising at 39,000ft about 5 hours into the flight. It’s unclear what type of emergency the A330-900 had but the aircraft reached a descent rate of about 5,000ft per min. Paramedics were standing by at Newark Liberty International Airport to offer assistance. The A330-900(CS-TUJ) is one of the newer aircrafts in the airliner’s fleet. The has been flying for about 4 years.
