“Our original instructions are to listen to the cloud floating by and the wind blowing by. That’s poetry and prose in English, but it is ‘wakahan’ in the Lakotan language. It means to consciously apply mystery to everything. Everything is alive and has its own consciousness.”

Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.
And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures.

Re: excerpt above, Michael Meade had this to say on his fantastic podcast, Living Myth:

“For in this amazing Eros of life, the human heart has bees and beehives and honey inside it, and it has the earth that sustains those beehives as well, and if we can’t find the beehives in our hearts, how can we figure out how to help the birds and the bees remain in this world?”

‘In many Asian-American households, you take off your shoes. We’re not obsessed with cleanliness any more than anyone else but the act is an act of respect: “I’m going to take off my shoes to enter something important. I’m going to give you my best self.” And I think even consciously, when I read or give lectures or when I teach, I lower my voice, I want to make my words deliberate, I want to enter, I want to take off the shoes of my voice so that I can enter a place with care, so I can do the work that I need to do.’

‘we will not reveal
our conclusions until
the End of Times, which has
been scheduled repeatedly

and then canceled because
no one can imagine
what we would do
without each other

without these comings and
goings and the little gasp
of recognition that is all
we are allowed to leave behind’

‘The second seed was the sacred stories: myths, legends, fairy tales, folklore, and the perennial themes that keep reappearing in various guises throughout history. They have always been with us, so that however far we have wandered into the Labyrinth of Separation, we have always had a lifeline, however tenuous and tangled, to the truth. The stories nurture that tiny spark of memory within us that knows our origin and our destination. The ancients, knowing that the truth would be co-opted and distorted if left in explicit form, encoded it into stories. When we hear or read one of these stories, even if we cannot decode the symbolism, we are affected on an unconscious level. Myths and fairy tales represent a very sophisticated psychic technology. Each generation of storytellers, without consciously intending to, transmits the covert wisdom that it learned, unconsciously, from the stories told it.’

For two years I have lived in woodlands and enchanted castles, torn between contemplation and action: on the one hand hoping to catch a glimpse of the face of a beautiful creature of mystery who, each night, lies down beside her knight; on the other, having to choose between the cloak of invisibility or the magical foot, feather, or claw that could metamorphose me into an animal. And during these two years the world about me gradually took on the attributes of fairyland, where everything that happened was a spell or a metamorphosis, where individuals, plucked from the chiaroscuro state of mind, were carried away by pre-destined loves, or were bewitched; where sudden disappearances, monstrous transformations occurred, where right had to be discerned from wrong, or paths bristling with obstacles led to a happiness held captive by dragons. Also in the lives of people and nations, which until now had seemed to be at a standstill, anything seemed possible: snake pits opened up and were transformed into rivers of milk; kings who had been thought kindly turned out to be brutal parents; silent, bewitched kingdoms suddenly came back to life. I had the impression that the lost rules which govern the world of folklore were tumbling out of the magic box I had opened.
Now that the book is finished, I know that this was not a hallucination, a sort of professional malady, but the confirmation of something I already suspected – folktales are real.

~Italo Calvino, introduction to ITALIAN FOLKTALES
