MY HUSBAND TOLD ME TO STOP WORRYING ABOUT HIS LOCKED DESK DRAWER – SO I OPENED IT WHEN HE WAS OUT OF TOWN
My husband, Adam, works from home. He's always been particular about his office, which I respected.
But six months ago, he added a lock to one of his desk drawers.
And overnight, my easygoing husband turned into a guard dog.
I'm talking:
Snapping if I walked too close.
Slamming the drawer shut when I entered.
Taking his laptop into the bathroom.
And anytime I asked about the lock?
"It's just boring work stuff. Why are you making such a big deal?"
"You're being paranoid. Stop worrying."
I wanted to believe him.
But nobody locks a drawer for "boring work stuff."
And the feeling that something was seriously off? I couldn't shake it.
Then last month, Adam left town for a "conference."
I knew this was my one chance.
I paced the house for hours, telling myself I was overreacting.
But eventually, hands shaking, I picked the lock.
I braced myself for anything.
Cash.
Fake IDs.
Love letters.
Anything but what I actually found.
Inside was a neatly stacked pile of greeting cards.
Birthday cards. Congratulations cards. Father's Day cards.
All signed.
None from me.
