Navigating racism in the workplace is never easy, but knowing how to respond can make all the difference.
From overt acts of racism to subtle microaggressions like “You’re so articulate” or “How did you get this job?”, Black professionals face unique challenges that often go unnoticed.
If you’re dealing with these experiences, here are a few action steps:
🚫 Know the rules: Hair discrimination? Only four states ban it. Knowing the law (especially around recording conversations) is key.
📝 Document everything: Dates, emails, comments—keep it all. It’s not just for your peace of mind, it’s your evidence.
👩🏽💼 Hire a lawyer: Yes, even for the "innocent" microaggressions. A good one will give you a free 30-minute consult to decide if you have a case.
❌ HR might not be your ally: Their priority? Protect the company. Yours? Protect yourself.
🚪 Prepare to exit: Sadly, many who report racism face retaliation. Have an exit strategy and decide what you want—settlement, policy change, or just a clean break.
Racism may be subtle or explicit, but the toll it takes is real. By taking these steps, you ensure you’re not just surviving, but taking back control.

Data-driven Storytelling
Our biases reflect an absence of data. An absence of the hundreds of thousands of data points forming the basis of experiences that define each person’s personal story.
Individuals and organizations serious about reducing the impact of bias focus on closing data gaps that lead to unconscious bias about people, employees, and communities.
As co-founder and CEO of Pluto, Martin Fogelman works with companies to understand the stories data reveal about its employees to make sure those stories are heard and included. Corey and Martin will dive into the power of data for storytelling and how we use analytics to drive accountability.
