Amid coronavirus fears, school closures and shelter-in-place mandates — including a new one in Los Angeles last Thursday and in New York last Friday — many women have added teacher, coach, germ police and round-the-clock caregiver to their résumés.

“I feel like I have five jobs: mom, teacher, C.C.O., house cleaner, chef,” said Sarah Joyce Willey, a chief client officer for a health services company in Sharon, Mass., who has been working from home while teaching her 7- and 9-year-olds all week, while her husband, who works for the state of Rhode Island, is at work. “My kids also call me ‘Principal mommy’ and the ‘lunch lady.’ It’s exhausting.”

"Despite the fact that the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was enacted in 1978, discrimination against pregnant women and mothers in the workplace is still prevalent. Lawsuits involving women who need accommodations at work while pregnant increased by 315% between 2006 and 2016.”

Additionally, research from our 50 Ways to Fight Bias program suggest, maternal bias is the strongest type of gender bias. When hiring managers know a woman has children—because “PTA coordinator” appears on her résumé—she is 79% less likely to be hired. And if she was hired, she would be offered an average of $11,000 less in salary.

It's with a heavy heart (again... #f**kcancer!) that we say goodbye to another woman founder to cancer.

Thuy Thanh Truong was a PITCH finalist at our "The Next Billion" Conference in 2013.

In the words of our Founder Shaherose Charania:

"Thuy came in from Vietnam with her app startup in tow with an impressive 13 million downloads and an inspiring founder story all served up in iconic traditional Vietnamese dress.

She eventually settled stateside and she brought with her her infectious passion and fearlessness.

When we introduced Thuy to Nora Poggi and Insiyah Saeed that same year Nora decided to document her startup life for the much needed (and now award-winning) film She Started It."
