We had so much fun music supervising this one and putting a new spin on a classic show tune.

‎Unfinished: Deep South on Apple Podcasts

For this week’s listening session, we’re recommending “Unfinished: Deep South”, a brand new podcast that tells the true story of the unsolved lynching of Isadore Banks, a successful African-American farmer living in the Deep South during the 1950’s. We're 3 episodes deep and we are hooked!

A production of Witness Docs from Stitcher and Market Road Films, the podcast was created, written, produced and narrated by Taylor Hom and Neil Shea (full disclosure: these two are our very own Dana Hom's sister and brother-in-law. Literal duotone family!). Taylor and Neil spent 18 months researching and conducting interviews to bring us this story.

We hear the term ‘systemic racism’ a lot these days. To understand what that really means, it’s crucial that we listen to personal stories like this one. Isadore’s story is a clear example of how racist policy and racist acts have worked in tandem throughout our history to prevent African-Americans from accumulating generational wealth. We’re on the edge of our seat waiting for the next chapter.

For this week’s listen, instead of a playlist, your duotone fam has decided to recommend a podcast that took us Back to School.

From the 1619 podcast created by The New York Times, Episode 3: The Birth of American Music dives into the history of pop music in America and discovers just how deeply Black culture and history is woven into all the music we know and love - from Pop to Country to Jazz to Hip-Hop and, yes, even Yacht Rock!

This is a really enjoyable and informative listen that we promise you will get something out of.

duotone-selector: songs for 4th of july - edition 10 - freedom vibes

Compiled by team duotone, this week’s playlist is called “Freedom Vibes” and it’s meant to be the soundtrack for your 4th of July holiday weekend.

Here in America, we’ve been taught that the 4th of July holiday is about freedom. Freedom is the calling card of a true American.

Considering Juneteenth, considering Pride, and considering the current movement for equality out here in the streets, we can’t actually consider ourselves “about freedom” until every one of our citizens feels like they are truly free.

This playlist, centering Black artists and artists of color, aims to capture the spirit of being free, of being equal.

Have a great 4th of july, everyone. Let’s take care of each other so we can all be free.

In honor of Juneteenth, we decided to postpone Friday's playlist to today.

As we continue our deep dive into Black music, the new installment of the duotone playlist, compiled by Stefan Weiner, shines a light on early Jazz and Blues.

Both genres are deeply rooted in African musical traditions, work songs and spirituals, as well as Afro-Cuban rhythms and European folk and dance music. Even with their international influences, they are both uniquely American. Jazz and Blues are the DNA of so much of the music that we listen to today.

Enjoy our journey back in time.

The Innocence Files | Official Trailer | Netflix

We’ve posted about this docuseries before, but in light of the current movement and much-needed calls for police and criminal justice reform, we think it’s worth sharing again.

The Innocence Files on Netflix documents the important work of the Innocence Project in overturning wrongful convictions, which disproportionately affect the Black community.

Episodes 7, 8, 9 (‘The Prosecution’ episodes) were scored by our very own Peter Nashel.

In the spirit of elevating Black voices, this week’s playlist, compiled by Jordan Lieb aka Black Light Smoke, looks back at the foundation of House music.

House, at its roots, is the sound of Black and LGBTQ+ urban club culture. House music brought everyone together - Black, White, Latino, Gay, Straight, Trans - with a single purpose: TO DANCE. This playlist serves as a humble attempt to highlight just a few of the many legendary Black DJs and producers who changed music history.

House music was born in Chicago in the late 1970s and early 80s. DJ Frankie Knuckles, considered the godfather of House, forever changed the genre with his innovative style of mixing - looping disco records and incorporating drum machines. From there, the sound spread to New York with DJs like Larry Levan at the legendary Paradise Garage, and eventually over to England.

In this playlist, you’ll hear “On & On” (1984) by Jesse Saunders, which is the very first house record to be pressed. “Acid Tracks” (1987) by Phuture (DJ Pierre, DJ Spanky, Herb J) began the Acid House genre. Later, Black luminaries like Kevin Saunderson (of Inner City), Juan Atkins and Derrick May continued the evolution with their Detroit techno sound.

We absolutely must recognize the immeasurable contributions made by Black musicians throughout our history. We can never forget that Black culture spawned generations of music lovers and partygoers, entire genres and subgenres of Dance music, and the very advent of the DJ and the nightclub. We honor you.

Breonna Taylor

This is an amazing example of our collective strength.

RocNation engaged 33 celebrities including Cardi B, Alicia Keys, and Ellen DeGeneres to use their enormous reach to send a personalized video with this question:

Do You Know What Happened to Breonna Taylor?

We are honored to have done the mix for such a far-reaching project at a time when the world has opened their ears to hear these stories.

Breonna was a remarkable young Black woman whose life was cut short by police unjustly serving a “no-knock” warrant at her house.

Please take a moment to listen to Breonna Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, tell her story. Tamika Mallory of Until Freedom also explains actions you can take to help bring justice to Breonna.

To the Black community:

We are dedicating this week’s playlist to you. We have compiled a playlist of music with Black voices and we are listening to it over and over and over. We are listening.

As musicians and DJs, the DNA of Black music, Black culture and Black history is imprinted in every piece of music we write and play. You inspire us, you guide us, and we are indebted to you. Mostly, though, we care about you. Your lives matter to us.

We are deeply sickened, outraged and saddened by the horrific deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and the far too many other victims of police brutality. The death of Ahmaud Arbery has us enraged. We want you to know that we are opening our ears and our hearts to you right now. We are ready to fight for you, for equality.

Words and songs inevitably fade to quiet and we want to take action that creates change. We have made a donation to the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund. We will continue to listen, research, and learn about other ways we can act to eradicate injustice and inequality.

We are also looking inward and identifying ways we can do better as a company to expand our network to include more Black voices. We are meeting next week to discuss an action plan.

To anyone else whose attention we have here, we sincerely hope you listen to the voices in our playlist - but mostly we urge you to listen to your Black friends, Black writers, and Black artists. Many of them are, at this very moment, loudly calling out for equality.

Peace and love. Equality.

The Innocence Files

Not sure what to binge watch next? Introducing The Innocence Files which just premiered today (!!) on Netflix.

Super proud to share that our very own Peter Nashel scored episodes 7, 8, and 9 ('The Prosecution' episodes, directed by Alex Gibney, Andy Grieve, and Sarah Dowland respectively).

The docuseries focuses on the work of The Innocence Project, and shines a powerful light on the untold personal stories behind eight cases of wrongful conviction that they have uncovered and worked to overturn.

Big ups as always to Pete's righthand man Brian Deming for the musical assist and help with production and mixing. S/O to Landon Knoblock and Leo Sidran for their contributions as well.

...

Check out what rogerebert.com had to say about the docuseries ~

"Equally moving, informative, and infuriating, Netflix’s 'The Innocence Files' is one of the best true crime series ever made. Going well beyond the typically sensational whodunit formula to paint a comprehensive portrait of our justice system's failures, it’s a must-see for anyone interested in how innocent people end up going to jail...”
