Some towns just get winter.

Lake Placid is one of them.

On our recent trip, the whole town felt alive—World Cup athletes cooling down along Mirror Lake, kids playing hockey on the frozen surface, and even an L.L.Bean “bootmobile” parked outside a film screening on Main Street.

We skied Whiteface, of course—but what stayed with me just as much was everything in between.

Morning runs around Mirror Lake (3 miles of pure Adirondack charm), dog sleds gliding across the ice, cozy coffee stops, and that feeling that no one here is rushing winter out the door.

We stayed at a simple, well-located hotel, walked almost everywhere, and found ourselves slowing down in the best possible way.

If you’re looking for a winter getaway that blends outdoor adventure with small-town charm, Lake Placid is hard to beat.

Just wrapped up all my travel notes from a trip to Jay Peak Resort. This might be my favorite discovery of the whole trip. Perched on the Trout River, The Inn is a boutique property that feels like a well-kept secret. Built in 1890, the place has gone through a few owners, and the current one has filled it with soul. Each of the 11 rooms is eclectic and warm, with furnishings sourced from garage sales — but it somehow feels Aspen-chic. Breakfast is included, and a few rooms have twin beds, perfect for mother/daughter or parent/kid trips. No TVs in the rooms — which, as a Ski Mom, I consider a total plus.

I don’t have time for masks that take forever, this one from Ursa Major works fast and smells great (like a forest). Put on clean dry skin, wait 5 minutes then wipe off with a damp cloth. Easy!
