This week’s pick is Burmese Bites, the family-run Astoria restaurant built on three decades of feeding New Yorkers.

Myo Lin Thway began making palata for church fairs in 1995. Burmese Bites later became a Queens Night Market favorite, moved into the Queens Center Mall food court, and finally opened its first permanent restaurant on 31st Avenue this summer.

Myo now runs it with his wife and business partner, Rebecca Nant. Order the flaky kyat thar palata, crispy pat tote [fried chicken wontons], and lahpet thoke, a bright, deeply savory salad made with fermented tea leaves.

This week’s pick takes over the Guggenheim rotunda.

Taryn Simon: Father Country I Do Love You unfolds across 42 chapters, tracing the life of an unnamed federal agent through evidence connected to espionage, child soldiers, impeachment, Hollywood, and the machinery of American power.

It is also Simon’s most personal work. Her father worked for the US government in Thailand before manufacturing and selling arcade games, but she never learned his full story.

That unfinished family history sits at the center of an exhibition opening during America’s 250th anniversary.

It is the Guggenheim’s first monographic rotunda presentation by a photography-based artist. And it is worth the visit.

Thai food becomes the canvas for art across NYC this week.

The first Tom Yum Week has arrived in New York, bringing together 17 Thai restaurants and 36 artists and creatives for a citywide exploration of food, art and contemporary Thai culture.

Rather than a traditional restaurant week, each participating restaurant has been paired with creatives who respond to a dish, ingredient or story through film, fashion, sound, illustration, augmented reality and other forms of art.

At Lalyn, the opening celebration, the collaboration brings food together with film by Art Parnitudom and fashion by Thai designer Takara Wong.

Elsewhere around the city, a jungle curry becomes a sound and visual experience at KRU, SkyIce turns the ingredients of tom yum into illustrated characters alongside a Tom Yum Sorbet, and Valla Table invites diners to assemble a Southern Thai Khao Yam themselves.

At Game of 1000 Boxes, you are not watching from the sidelines. Teams of four step up to glowing podiums and compete through 10 fast-paced games testing everything from reaction time and trivia to strategy and teamwork.

A live host keeps things moving while a 40-foot LED wall, studio lighting and cameras turn the room into something closer to a live game show than your usual night out. And yes, it gets competitive.

The experience runs about an hour, with a bar and lounge for drinks before or after you play. The new flagship is now on the Bowery in NoHo.

This week’s BKLS Pick: Kirbee’s in Greenpoint.

Two award-winning Texas pitmasters officially opened this compact barbecue counter on September 4: Chuck Charnichart of Barbs B Q, winner of Michelin’s 2025 Texas Young Chef Award, and Jonny White, co-founder of Goldee’s, Texas Monthly’s No. 1 barbecue joint in 2021.

The menu comes as four fixed plates. Jonny’s Plate leans Central Texas with brisket, pork ribs, and turkey. Chuck’s brings a Tex-Mex point of view with brisket, sausage, Molotov pork ribs, green spaghetti, and charro beans.

The counter seats roughly two dozen, and the opening crowds have been real. Go early or try later in the afternoon when the line may be shorter.

📍 55 McGuinness Boulevard South, Greenpoint—Brooklyn

Little Italy’s Feast of San Gennaro turns 100 this year. 🇮🇹

From September 17–27, Mulberry Street fills with processions, live music, neighborhood traditions, and the food people return for every year.

A few BKLS tips before you go:

1. Bring cash. Many vendors remain cash-only, and carrying bills saves you from the festival ATM lines.

2. Go before midday if you want manageable lines. Weekends get crowded quickly.

3. Wear comfortable shoes. The feast stretches across 11 blocks, and you will cover more ground than you think.

4. Use Mott and Elizabeth Streets when Mulberry becomes shoulder-to-shoulder.

5. Take the subway. Use the 6, J, Z, N, Q, R, or W to Canal Street, or the B or D to Grand Street.

6. If you can choose only one day, make it Saturday, September 26. The Grand Procession begins at 2 PM, followed by a Napoli Expo-sponsored live performance from Naples at 6 PM.

And do not make it only about the food. Step inside the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood—the spiritual heart of a celebration that began with faith and community.

Want the full plan? Our guide has what to eat, the events worth planning around, and a walking route through the feast.
