I stared at the email on my phone, my three-week-old daughter asleep on my chest, and felt my entire world collapse.
"Due to restructuring, your position has been eliminated effective immediately."
They fired me. While I was on maternity leave. While I was recovering from an emergency C-section. While I was surviving on two hours of sleep and learning how to keep a tiny human alive.
I had given TechVibe Solutions six years of my life. Six years of 60-hour weeks, missed dinners, canceled vacations. I built their entire client retention program from scratch—the one that increased their revenue by 40% last quarter. My manager, Derek, had literally called me "irreplaceable" at the holiday party three months ago.

I called HR immediately, my hands shaking so badly I could barely hold the phone.
"This is illegal," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "You can't terminate someone on protected leave."
"Actually," the HR director said in that cold, corporate voice, "we can eliminate positions during restructuring. It's not personal, Sarah. It's business."
Not personal. They had just stolen my income, my health insurance, my career—while I was bleeding through postpartum pads and crying over cracked nipples—and it wasn't personal.
I hung up and cried for three hours straight.
But then something shifted. As I held my daughter and thought about the kind of woman I wanted her to become, I realized I had two choices: I could crumble, or I could fight.

I spent the next eight weeks documenting everything. Every email. Every Slack message. Every promised promotion Derek had dangled in front of me. I reached out to former colleagues who had also been "restructured" out. I found a lawyer who specialized in pregnancy discrimination.
And then, three months after they fired me, my phone rang.
It was Derek.
"Sarah, we need to talk. We made a mistake. A huge mistake. The retention program is falling apart and clients are leaving. We need you back. Name your price."
