My husband almost divorced me over these stained glass stairs, and now they're the reason people drive across town just to see our house. When we bought this 1920s colonial, the staircase was hidden under layers of ugly brown carpet that probably hadn't been changed since the Carter administration. I was expecting plain wooden steps underneath, maybe some nice oak I could refinish, but when we ripped up that carpet I literally screamed.
These gorgeous stained glass panels were embedded right into each step, covered up for decades like some kind of buried treasure. My husband took one look and said "we're covering these back up, they're too impractical" because he was worried about the glass breaking or being slippery. We had our biggest fight in twenty-two years of marriage, with me sobbing that we couldn't hide something so beautiful again and him worried about liability and resale value.
I finally found this amazing restoration artist through the stained glass community on the Tedooo app who came out and assessed them, explaining how to properly seal and protect the glass while keeping it functional as stairs. She even helped me source matching glass pieces to repair two small chips from decades of being walked on. Now these steps are the centerpiece of our home, catching the afternoon light and throwing rainbow patterns across the walls, and my husband admits they're the most beautiful thing in our house. Sometimes you have to fight for the things that make your heart sing, even when everyone else thinks you're crazy, and now I'm actually selling custom stained glass pieces through my own shop on the Tedooo app inspired by these gorgeous family heirlooms.
