Entitled Welikia (My good home), this piece honors and acknowledges the continued spiritual presence, through the land, of Manhattan’s original people, the Lenape, and attempts to articulate the painful earning for reconnection between a land and its people.

The composition features samples of native Lenape speakers repeating lines relating to “home” and “going home”. Also included are field recordings from Inwood Hill Park and the window of my studio on Broadway and 215th St. These recordings juxtapose the incessant din of modern day life in Inwood with the nearby tranquil presence of Manhattan’s last remaining old growth forest, where the trails allow you to literally follow in the footsteps of this land’s original people...

Thank you to Jeffrey Gibson and everyone The Metropolitan Museum of Art for the opportunity to perform my composition on the roof of the museum at the groundbreaking ceremony for their new contemporary wing.

“It changed my life.” has been the most consistent feedback I’ve heard most from those who experienced POWER FULL BECAUSE WE ARE DIFFERENT.

And as the exhibition drew to a close this week, after a 22 month stint at Mass MoCA, I can concur.

Collaborating with Jeffrey Gibson and composing the music for this exhibition was such an immense pleasure and honor, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity.

Raising awareness of the importance of two spirit people in indigenous communities, historically, presently, and into the future, is such vital work and I was deeply humbled by this hugely educational experience.

But personally, the best thing to have come out of this exhibition has been the friendships. People whose faces I saw continuously on screen while scoring the films have entered into my life in such a beautiful way… Ty Fierce Metteba Arielle Twist Devynn Emory I love you guys and I’m extremely grateful to share a real life timeline with such talented souls ⚡️❤️‍🔥⚡️

Grandma Lovie

It isn’t clear whether my grandma gifted this photo to my grandpa and was calling him her “favorite bartender”, or the other way around?

Either way, neither of them were bartenders, but they could both make a mean martini.

My grandma actually worked as a nurse at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Washington Heights, and my grandfather worked as a purchaser for the cruise liner company Graceline, which used to sail to the Caribbean from Pier 57 in Manhattan.

My grandpa got my mom a job as a waitress on one of those ships, the Santa Rosa, where my dad worked as an engineer in the boiler room, and this is how they met.

But that’s a story for another day…

The point here, as this gorgeous photo recently gifted to me by my cousin Jimmy clearly shows, is Lovie was a legend… ❤️

The second activation of CHOPPED, my collaboration with Arielle Twist as part of Jeffrey Gibson’s POWERFULL BECAUSE WE’RE DIFFERENT exhibition, begins today MASS MoCA and has been extended for a further week so you can check it out Aug 1-9!

Commissioned by MASS MoCA in conjunction with Gibson’s exhibition and produced by Patrick ‘Reachout’ Coll, CHOPPED is a sound work informed by notions of erasure, disembodiment, hauntings, and the power of absence and ancestral presence. Twist conceived the sound installation in the wake of increasing discrimination and violence suffered by trans and gender nonconforming people, particularly in America. CHOPPED is both a manifesto and a prayer, authored and performed by Twist and a small number of trans collaborators. In the absence of her physical presence, Twist offers viewers the power of her voice, her spirit, and a braided lock of her hair.

About the Artist:

Arielle Twist’s (George Gordon First Nation and Sipekne’katik First Nation, Cree) interdisciplinary practice blends poetics and visual modes of creation to explore the realities and legacy of Indigenous and Trans* life and grief. Exploring and experimenting through mediums such as textiles, painting, performance, literature, and language, Twist is reconnecting with the legacy of Indigenous Trans matriarchy and womanhood. Recent exhibitions include Indigenous Joys, Neutral Ground, Saskatchewan, and Time As A Relative, Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, Kelowna, British Columbia. Twist has received awards from the Writers’ Trust of Canada, Indigenous Voices Awards, and Arts Nova Scotia for her debut poetry collection Disintegrate/Dissociate (2019, Arsenal Pulp Press).

Sadly I was not able to make Elph’s memorial service and say farewell to him with friends and family, but I think about him everyday and always will…

It’s so exceptionally rare for someone’s art and their personality to mirror each other so perfectly. His life was such proof of the power of art, in its purest form. With so many blaggers and narcissists out there, when a real artist comes along it feels seismic when they pass to the spirit world…

Brian was not only a magnificent artist, he was a true King, sent by creator to remind us how beautiful we are and how beautiful life is.

His legacy lives on…
