Should I wait for it to die or replace it now?
The condenser and furnace are both from 1985. The previous homeowner’s dog peed on the condenser.

My dad says if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I feel like this must be really inefficient and I’m probably wasting a lot of money on gas and electricity.

If you think I should replace it, what SEER should I go for? My house is a 1700sq ft cape cod in the upper midwest.

AC starts losing ability to cool once in direct sunlight
My AC unit starts losing its ability to keep the house cool under 75 once it hits around 1pm till about 7pm as the sun is directly on it. 1500 SF home. Will adding a dark mesh around those poles to block out the sun do anything to help?

Brilliant or stupid? Installing a water hose bypass into drain line to flush out clogs.
Our drain lines are constantly getting clogged. Every 2 or 3 months I’m screwing around with the vacuum, vinegar, hot water, bleach, baking soda, etc. or spending money for the AC Tech to deal with the issue. A buddy of mine, with similar clogging issues, installed a water hose bypass a couple years ago. Every few months he flushes his drain line with water. He hasn’t had a clog since. I love the idea, and candidly the only concern I have is leaks and unintentionally introducing water into our home. Keep in mind that our drain lines are roughly 30 to 40 feet long cause the AC handlers are in the middle of the first and second floor and we have a larger home.

What do you guys think? Is this catastrophically stupid? Is there something else I should consider?

New homeowner. I was leaving for work and our heat pump looked like this at about 7am with outside temps at around freezing. The heat was set at about 65 and still blowing warm air. Is this normal or is it time to call a technician?

AC unit under deck—how bad is it?
Bought a new home two years with the AC unit under the deck. The unit is venting the hot air away from the wall (into the “free space” under the deck. To alleviate some of the hot air we put a grate in the little side door and put a big lattice on one of the deck walls.

Tech recommended we relocate the unit to just outside the deck, under the overhang.

I’m trying to understand how bad this is (eg. how much lifespan will it take off the unit) and whether it’s worth relocating now or just wait until we need a new unit to do all at once.

Considering installing an exhaust fan by the lattice to help suck the hot air out if we don’t end up moving the unit.

Any help would be appreciated!

Whole house humidifier uses 30 gallons per hour. What gives?
Brand new homeowner. Solenoid was not working, so we got a new one from Amazon (990-53 Water Inlet Valve Humidifier Water Solenoid Valve Compatible with GeneralAire) which should be using something like 3 gallons of water per hour. Well, it's working now and is using 30 gallons (!!) per hour. Any ideas what's going on and how to fix it? Any advice is much appreciated.

Navien combiboiler using a lot of fuel
I installed a Navien combiboiler ncb240/130 I believe. When it’s cold outside (30 degrees ) I use about 90 therms a month. My gas bill is close to 500.00. The boiler heats the main floor of our house about 1400 sqft. The water set point is 175 degrees the return temp is 160. What can I do to decrease the gas bill 😳.
