$115M construction project aims to enhance safety on Route 61 in Schuylkill County
PennDOT District 5 Construction Manager Brent Hentz says this $115 million project will make this stretch of Route 61 safer.

FRACKVILLE, Pa. β€” This is the aftermath of the blast as construction crews along Route 61 between Frackville and St. Clair work to move a mountain.

Throughout the process, workers close the northbound and southbound lanes on this almost 5-mile stretch of Route 61 for about 15 minutes. Then they plant explosives in the mountain to safely remove the existing ground.

The $115 million project began last year, each blast makes way for a new, safer roadway.

"Oh yeah, yeah, this intersection is prone for accidents for multiple reasons," said Brent Hentz, PennDOT District 5 Construction Manager.

Brent Hentz, construction manager for PennDOT District 5, says the sharp twists and turns on Route 61 are to blame for some of the crashes in the area.

This project, which he says is the largest non-interstate project for the district, will fix that.

"It's a complete road reconstruction. Everything that's existing will be all new and we're going to realign some of the more aggressive curves, straightening them out making them a little bit smoother transition which is a huge safety feature to the new roadway," said Hentz.

The new bridge crews just completed for the Schuylkill County Municipal Authority here at the intersection with Darkwater Lane is set to open in a few weeks.

"Essentially, that will line everything up once it's signalized. A lot safer turns plus slowing people down the hill," said Ian Carson, PennDOT Project Engineer.

Hentz says there are still a few more blasts to go, as each blast accelerates the process.

Drivers using this stretch of Route 61 can expect the last few blasts to happen periodically at noon. Crews will close the north and southbound lanes for 15 minutes each time.

The project between Frackville and St. Claire is set to wrap up at the beginning of 2029.
