In 1999, Cornealious “Mike” Anderson was found guilty of robbing a Burger King in Missouri and received a 13-year prison sentence. While out on bail during his appeals, he was supposed to be notified to begin his sentence, but due to a clerical mistake, the authorities thought he was already in prison. For the next 13 years, Anderson lived a normal life under his own name, starting a business, getting married, raising a family, and staying out of trouble with the law.
In 2013, when his supposed “release date” came up, officials discovered he had never served his time. Anderson was arrested and sent to prison, but his case gained widespread attention because of the productive, law-abiding life he had led during those years. After only three weeks behind bars, a judge decided to set him free, recognizing that Anderson had effectively turned his life around during the oversight. His story highlights both a significant flaw in the justice system and the potential for compassion to correct its errors.
