Japanese scientists led by Dr. Katsu Takahashi of Kyoto University discovered a monoclonal antibody drug that blocks a protein called USAG-1, which normally suppresses tooth development. In 2018, they demonstrated that inhibiting USAG-1 stimulated new tooth growth in mice, and later achieved similar success in ferrets, whose dental structure closely resembles that of humans.

The research advanced rapidly, and by 2024 a startup called Toregem Biopharma was founded to develop this drug for human use. Clinical trials began in adult volunteers to test safety, with plans to include children affected by congenital tooth loss. If successful, the treatment could provide a natural alternative to dentures and implants by 2030.

Thomas Jefferson made his own Bible, called The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, or the “Jefferson Bible.” He respected Jesus’ moral ideas but doubted the supernatural parts of Christianity. In the early 1800s, he cut out miracles, the resurrection, and divine references from the New Testament, keeping only Jesus’ ethical teachings. He hid this project during his life to avoid criticism in religious early America. The work shows his unique blend of faith and reason.

Between 2020 and 2022, a nine-year-old boy in southern France survived on his own for two years after being abandoned by his mother. She had moved in with her boyfriend several kilometers away, leaving him to live alone in a small apartment without heating, hot water, or consistent access to food.

During the cold winters, he kept warm by wrapping himself in three duvets. He survived on whatever he could find—mostly canned goods, pastries, and cake—and managed to keep his situation secret from classmates and teachers.

Despite the severe neglect, he never missed a day of school, maintaining steady attendance, good behavior, and solid grades—factors that allowed his isolation to go unnoticed for so long. Neighbors occasionally heard him playing or jumping on his bed but had no idea he was living completely alone.

When authorities eventually uncovered the truth, the case shocked France and ignited a national debate about child welfare and oversight. The boy’s quiet resilience and determination to maintain a sense of normal life made him a powerful symbol of endurance in the face of extraordinary neglect.

In 1990, David Kirby, a young AIDS activist, died in Ohio, surrounded by his family. His battle with AIDS was captured in a poignant photograph by Therese Frare, published in Life magazine. The image, showing Kirby’s final moments, became an iconic symbol of the AIDS crisis, raising global awareness.

The photograph, known as “The Face of AIDS,” depicted Kirby’s frail body cradled by his father, with his mother and sister nearby. It humanized the epidemic, sparking empathy and urgency. The image’s raw emotion fueled advocacy, shaping public perception and policy on AIDS during the early 1990s.

During WWII, US soldiers often personalized their GI C**t M1911 pistols by crafting transparent “sweetheart grips.” Utilizing Plexiglas salvaged from downed aircraft, they replaced the original wooden grips with clear ones, inserting photographs of loved ones or pin-up girls beneath the surface.
