During a brutal cold spell in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, a small black-and-white cat was found nearly frozen and lying motionless in the snow.
She was later named Birthday — a name that represented a new beginning after she came frighteningly close to losing her life.
Birthday had reportedly been living outside for weeks. When she was discovered, she was suffering from severe hypothermia and was in such critical condition that rescuers weren't sure she would survive.
A local animal rescuer, Carly Toth of Pet Friends, rushed to get her emergency veterinary care. Her body was dangerously cold, and veterinarians worked to slowly warm her with blankets, towels and heating equipment. Eventually, they detected a faint heartbeat and began fighting to save her.
Birthday survived.
But her ordeal wasn't over. She had serious injuries to her back legs, and despite the medical team's efforts, one of her legs eventually had to be amputated.
Yet Birthday kept fighting.
As she recovered, she began eating, gaining strength, kneading her paws and showing the people around her just how affectionate she was. One veterinary technician, Lizzie, became especially attached to her. What began as emergency medical care eventually turned into something much more permanent.
Lizzie couldn't imagine letting Birthday leave.
So the cat who had once been found freezing in the snow finally got something she had desperately needed all along — a safe, warm home and someone who would never abandon her again. ❤️
