As of this year servers in California are paid 16 an hour by their employers. I think it’s safe to say that tipping should be at least optional in California. If not a thing of the past.

UPDATE ON OWNER WITHHOLDING TIPS

UPDATE : Owner told me that me and my coworker were getting 200$ each and the rest would be split up amongst the kitchen staff, event coordinator, bussers, and bartenders.

Had a large party that me and a coworker split. We notified the party there was a service charge on the bill but they wanted to add more. Owner said they would hold onto and handle the extra tip

Had a table of 3 girls get some cheese dip and fries and split it between them. End up staying a couple hours hanging out but no biggie, they're chill 😎 Then they were abruptly gone with this left on the table with a linen draped over the fry bowl...

No thanks. I'll let a manager grab that one.

Fellow server wasn't ready after break so I picked up a table out of section, got busy and forgot about them for a little. Understandable to not tip, but a table next to them told me they were hardcore cussing me out. Whoops.

If the narrative is that they currently are struggling to live and are paid less than minimum wage why would they say anything less than $30/hr isn’t worth doing the job?

It’s almost as if these people aren’t struggling to live and are paid much more than they like to tell us.
