The other day I wrote a Facebook post about how I learned over time, and through experience, that a guitar tone can often work better in a mix with a little less gain, as opposed to more. My friend @themikedenton insisted that this means I can therefore only record clean tones because by reducing gain, you get a clean tone. Let’s see if his theory checks out!

We’re stunned and incredibly saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Francis Manzella. Francis was a renowned recording studio designer whose incredible work spans the globe. It was a pleasure to work with him to design The Ice Plant. He was so generous in sharing his knowledge, expertise and experience, as well as a lot of fun. We learned so much from him, and thanks to his design work we were able to be better at what we do, which in turn gave a even better experience and final product to our clients, which in turn gave more joy to their fans and listeners of music in general. He also was incredibly compassionate and thoughtful about the world we live in, especially with regard to matters of social justice. His memory will live on not just with those who knew him, but in the recording studios he designed, and the music made in them. Rest ln Peace, Francis.

Hi Friends! Governor Cuomo has cleared NYC to enter Phase 4 of reopening tomorrow, 7/20! This allows for media production, INCLUDING MUSIC, to start again! With that being the case, I’m ready to book sessions at The Ice Plant!

Because so many artists have been unable to work for the past several months, bookings made in the next few weeks may be done at a DISCOUNTED RATE. There's no time like the present!

As excited as I am to get back to working with artists to bring their musical visions to life, our collective health remains something to be taken very seriously. Anyone involved in sessions at The Ice Plant must comply with all state and city mandates regarding physical distancing, mask wearing, personal hygiene, etc. And indeed, the studio will be properly cleaned for every session. NYC has done an incredible job flattening the curve, and we should all be as vigilant as ever to continue to do so as reopening expands.

Hybrid picking in E mixolydian on our vintage #telecaster 💛🎸 #teletuesday

Exploring our new Mellotron M4000D with a short composition I created for marimba and bass clarinet ensemble:) A modern version of what is essentially the first sample-based synthesizer, the M4000D sounds identical to the original Mellotrons from the 60s and 70s, as the sounds are sampled from the original first-generation tapes that the vintage ones were made from. Updated for modern music production, it has various output and expression options, MIDI, etc. Other modern features include aftertouch, depth sensitivity, plus the ability to play and blend 2 sounds simultaneously-- which I think makes the unit really powerful, as it can create some lush textures even when playing a single note. When it comes to playability, it feels quite luxurious, as the M4000D sports a wooden keyboard that is remarkably smooth and responsive. All combined, these features create a truly seamless, expressive, and ANALOG experience while also giving the convenience and stability that the digital realm provides. And on top of that, it’s loaded with 100 loops from the Mellotron and Chamberlain libraries, making it essentially all of the best Mellotron models in a single instrument.
