Top 10 Things to Know About the Day of the Dead

"Here’s one thing we know: Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. Though related, the two annual events differ greatly in traditions and tone. Whereas Halloween is a dark night of terror and mischief, Day of the Dead festivities unfold over two days in an explosion of color and life-affirming joy."

We've all heard about the Day of the Dead or seen the classic sugar skull paintings—but what does this celebration really represent?

Journalists Mobilize to Connect Puerto Rico

From National Association of Hispanic Journalists:

"Dear NAHJ members,

With strong ties to Puerto Rico, our NAHJ members Mc Nelly Torres and Rafael Mejia will help to facilitate our initiative we recently launched to set up “communication stations” throughout all regions of the island.

It is important for us as an association, that our journalists on the ground are able to use the technology provided to help people connect with their families, news and relief efforts in the aftermath of the devastation from Hurricane Maria.

Today is the last day to donate to the crowdfunding campaign we've created to assist in purchasing the desperately needed communications equipment. Every dollar counts and we're counting on our NAHJ friends and family, to help us help Puerto Rico."

Why the departure of OC Weekly's 'Ask a Mexican' columnist highlights the endangered status of Latinos in media

"An analysis of high-ranking editors at major English-language dailies, released in August by the student reporting program at the Asian American Journalists’ Assn., reveal the same pattern. Latinos remain underrepresented — if represented at all. The New York Times and Washington Post each have one Latino editor on their mastheads. The Los Angeles Times has none (though the newsroom had the most diverse newsroom staff of the major newspapers polled.)

Certainly, the lack of a Latino presence affects not only the stories that get told, but how they get told — if at all."

#MoreLatinosInNews #CJS18

With Gustavo Arellano's departure from the OC Weekly, one of media's most prominent Latino journalists is without a platform. In a media landscape with few Latinos in positions of authority, his loss will be felt.

"We appreciate this country," said Maria Arenas with her mother Viviana Garcia - both from Mexico - outside of the Jacob Javitz Center. "It was exciting to vote."

Arenas said she came to watch the results tonight because it was her second time ever voting. She said the United States has given her the opportunity to work and right now she stays at home to take care of her kids.

If Hillary Clinton wins she said, "We'll celebrate."
