The Jamaica Inn, perched on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, was built in 1750 and has long been steeped in smuggling lore.

Its notoriety grew after Daphne du Maurier chose it as the setting for her 1936 novel Jamaica Inn, a suspenseful tale of mystery and menace.

Though it has inspired several film and television adaptations—including one directed by Alfred Hitchcock—the actual inn has never featured on screen.

An 1817 painting by Thomas Sutherland shows Caverswall Castle beside a modern-day view.

Located in Staffordshire, the current 17th-century mansion was built in 1615 by Matthew Cradock within the defensive walls of a 13th-century castle, originally fortified with a moat, curtain walls, and corner towers.

It played a role in the English Civil War and has since changed hands numerous times, including ownership by aristocrats, religious orders, and private individuals.

The castle was bought and restored by a developer in 2006, but legal restrictions on commercial use—such as events and holiday lets—sparked prolonged disputes.

After years of failed attempts to sell, the property finally changed ownership in 2021.
