He calls me “Chairman” and I call him “Mr. President” - all references to nearly three decades ago when we - Alhaji Sani Zoro(right) and Dr. Uchenna Ekwo (left)were involved in the leadership of Nigerian journalists. As National President, Sani was passionate about a “socially-relevant journalism practice.” Today we’ve diverged: I, in the academia and Sani continuing in the public service as one of the key special assistants managing public affairs in the Buhari administration. Sani is in New York with the team from the presidency for the United Nations General Assembly. Nice catching up with him after so long.

Data from the Africa Union estimates that $140 billion is lost through corruption annually in the continent- an equivalent of the GDP of all but five countries in Africa. Learn more @ CMPI Public Lecture 11/15/2021
Data from the Africa Union estimates that $140 billion is lost through corruption annually in the continent- an equivalent of the GDP of all but five countries in Africa. Experts say the lost amount can ensure uninterrupted power 24 hours a day to every citizen in Africa for 3 years. In Nigeria, the government’s aspiration to lift more than 100 million citizens out of poverty in the next 10 years may remain a mirage unless it tackles corruption seriously. In line with its stated mission of “communicating innovative and peaceful solutions to global challenges,” the Center for Media & Peace Initiatives (CMPI) New York - a media and policy think tank in special consultative status with the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council and affiliated with Rutgers University's School of Public Affairs and Administration convened the 2021 Public Lecture to shed a spotlight on anti-corruption measures in Africa. The featured speaker is H.E. Abubakar Malami (SAN), Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) speaks on “Tackling Corruption in Africa: An Evaluation of Tested Models.”
