Rising For Justice | Candace | BTS

A week ago, we shared Candace's journey of love, loss and recovery working with Rising for Justice formerly known as DC Law Students in Court. Now, we're bringing you behind the scenes with us into her home, a space that has brought her both tremendous joy and deep sorrow over the years. Shooting with Candace reminds us how documentary storytelling is, at its core, about listening to people and becoming a part of their spaces.

Check out this story of how Rising for Justice formerly known as DC Law Students in Court empowered one woman after tragedy struck and grief took over her life.

On occasion, our office transforms into a film set. 🎬

Had a blast shooting this weekend with Sunrise Movement, an organization to stop climate change through political action led by an army of wicked smart, passionate and determined young people. Though we were by far the oldest people on set, we were honored to be a part of their creative process! 🌞🌱 #climateaction #activism #youthled #sunrise #environment #film #setlife #BTS

CADE | Farmers Brand Anthem

Is there anything better than delicious, locally sourced food? This October, we were lucky enough to film amongst the gorgeous fall colors of upstate New York for a project with CADE Farms (Center for Agricultural Development & Entrepreneurship) which brings friends, families and communities closer together by giving grants to local, independently-run farms.

Like humans, microorganisms live everywhere in Manhattan, but they’re completely invisible to the naked eye. For this funky installment of our Science Sandbox series for Simons Foundation, we followed Sally Waring, a microbiologist at the Museum of Natural History who collects water samples all over the city and documents the wondrous lives of free-living microbes on her Instagram, Pondlife. Her discovery? We have more in common with these invisible city-dwellers than you’d think!

Today is #GivingTuesday, an international day of giving that falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year. In its honor, we encourage you to check out and share this fundraiser created by our very own Ryder Haske for Goya Primary School in the rural Koboko district of Uganda. Many of Goya Primary School's pupils are subsistence farmers who cannot afford expensive tuition fees, so in order to keep schooling affordable, Goya is forced to spend less on infrastructure and sanitation. Most notably, they do not have running water on the property.

With this fundraiser, we hope to bring new bathrooms with clean running water to Goya Primary School in order to prevent the spread of illness, the current leading cause of school absences. We believe good sanitation will make a lasting impact on the health, happiness and wellbeing of Goya's students and their beloved school, for years and years to come.

Capital Area Food Bank | Celebrate Food

For many of us, food is a symbol of love, comfort and celebration. But for everyone in the world, it is a necessity for growth, health and wellbeing. This Thanksgiving, we're thankful for partners like Capital Area Food Bank who understand how food insecurity can impact families and individuals, and are working hard to end hunger by bringing employment, health and housing to the DC community.

Ady Barkan | Dear Willow

We first met Ady Barkan in the beginning of 2018, intending to make a series of political ads. Little did we know that a year and a half later, we'd be wrapping a documentary about him and welcoming his daughter, Willow, into the world with him and his family.

This message from Ady is for Willow and for everyone uncertain about our country's future. We are eternally grateful to be a part of Ady's story, and the fight for our planet and our people.

#TBT to one of our most adventurous shoots to date: immersing ourselves in the rainforests of Borneo, the largest island in Asia, with The Nature Conservancy. Using microphones strapped securely to trees, TNC’s scientists recorded the sounds of the wildlife inhabiting the rainforest in order to measure its biodiversity and health.

This acoustic technology also revealed how the harvesting of palm oil, the most commonly produced vegetable oil in the world, has lead to deforestation, threatening some of Borneo’s most beloved native species like the orangutan. Thankfully, TNC has been able to use its rainforest recordings to develop lower-impact harvesting methods, helping to sustain the beautiful habitat on which Borneo’s people and wildlife rely.

In 2016, the Bornean #Orangutan became "critically endangered".

We followed The Nature Conservancy scientists who are using innovative acoustic technology to ensure that what's left of the orangutans' habitat is protected.

EDF | Colleen Rose Vignette

Colleen Rose is one of many military caregivers who juggles two jobs: providing 24-hour care to her husband, who was severely injured during deployment, and working full-time as an occupational therapist. She's passionate about both jobs, but they each require physical and emotional labor that leave her tired at the end of the day.

We partnered with Elizabeth Dole Foundation to illustrate how their Hidden Heroes campaign empowers Colleen and others in their roles as military caregivers, instead of pushing them into the shadows. By connecting them to one another, EDF creates an infinite network of support and appreciation for the invaluable work they do every day.
