The former Hotel Buena Vista in Buena Vista, VA, operated as a hotel from 1891-1893. It was closed because of the financial panic of 1893. It was then purchased by a minister and opened as a girl's college in 1901. The girl's college went under about 26 years ago. The campus was then taken over by another group and continues as a college. Buena Vista and Glasgow (just down the road) were targeted to be the next Pittsburgh due to the iron ore. Financiers decided to build another Queen Anne style hotel in Glasgow. It was perched high on top of a hill just like Hotel Buena Vista. The Glasgow Hotel displayed much grandeur and wealth. It had 200 guest rooms, public space, a grand ballroom, restaurant etc. It opened to much fanfare on New Year's Eve 1892. The wealthy and dignitaries came from far and from foreign countries. However, the next day, due to the financial panic, the bankers closed the hotel and evacuated the guests. The Reading Railroad, a large stakeholder, had declared bankruptcy. The Glasgow property sat vacant for 14 years, tied up in bankruptcy court. The elegant property was demolished having only operated for one night. The expected boom of this area never happened. Here are a few photos of the former Hotel Buena Vista. I really like the Queen Anne and Romanesque style of architecture. I'm glad that this building is still standing. It is currently used as administrative offices for Southern University.

3 days ago while driving a back road in the middle of nowhere in Greensville County I happened upon these signs at a turnoff. But I didn't go and investigate because the car was acting up. Plus I was an hour from home. After waiting several minutes I was able to drive home with no problem. But I love this stuff. I'll have to drive down there next time I'm in the area. I love checking out small unincorporated communities.
