There was a time when healthcare giant Bayer was hesitant about investing in social media. Fortunately, along came marcomms pro and health and wellness influencer Denise Vitola, who says she wakes up every day on a mission to make people feel inspired, healthier and stronger-willed. Vitola’s ‘No Apologies. Period.’ campaign for Midol had a deep and long-lasting impact both at Bayer internally, and externally at a pivotal time for women’s rights. From the inclusive language embedded in the campaign, which referred to ‘menstruators’ or ‘people who menstruate’ to the human impact of the campaign, not to mention the huge social buy-in, the campaign made waves and scooped awards including a Global SABRE and Best Social Media/Social Networking Campaign at the North American SABREs.

When tech PR shop SourceCode Communications hired former Weber Shandwick VP Kristen Stippich the agency was buying into her experience developing business and leading client services for a variety of organisations, not least Microsoft for which she had led a global programme at Weber.

Her lightbulb moments for SourceCode have included seeing an opportunity to evolve the agency’s narrative process, StoryHub, by tailoring it to critical moments for clients whether those be focused sessions around specific high-profile campaigns, or bigger picture work to develop compelling overall narratives.
Stippich also saw an opportunity to use data to better inform and guide clients, tell richer and more compelling stories, and prove the value of the agency’s work. She oversaw the development of the strategy and analytics practice within the agency, and the embedding of the team in client conversations to incorporate new offerings into new business proposals and organic growth conversations.

More recently she’s become an active voice on the subject of midlife discrimination and the need for workplace support for women in perimenopause and menopause, and currently holds the role of chief strategy officer for the Bloom network, a professional network for women in communications, as well as acting as a mentor through the initiative.

Within Bloom she founded Bloom Mpower, an inclusion group to celebrate midlife and help women better prepare for the challenges of menopause, and launched the Bloom Menofesto, a free downloadable resource and blueprint policy framework for all organisations looking to support midlife women at work, and the Bloom Mpower Accreditation, an employee-nominated award to recognise the businesses that demonstrate the very best support for perimenopausal and menopausal women at work.

Andrea suggests looking at your stakeholder map and identify who the most appropriate people to include when discussing what societal issues to engage with. But this very much depends on how strong and detailed your stakeholder map is. You can easily fall into the trap of just including the leaders of the organisation.

Andrea is right in terms that someone does have to make a decision and take the lead otherwise there’ll be inertia. But there must be some form of balance and engagement with the various demo and socio graphics of your organisation.

Conversations around societal issues need to be inclusive and the first place to start is with your employees. Yep, you can no longer get away with just words on a screen or in print.

It’s absolutely worth spending your time getting to know your audience(s) and working on your stakeholder map.

Even though men only accounted for 25% of the overall PR workforce, they hold a larger share of the leadership level in the North American public relations sector, at 51%.
