The U.S. economy added just 50,000 jobs in December, marking the worst year for hiring since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic halted global economic activity.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 2025 saw a total payroll employment increase of 584,000, averaging 49,000 jobs per month. This is a significant drop from the 168,000 average monthly gains recorded in 2024.

The unemployment rate slightly decreased to 4.4% in December. Despite the modest job additions, the year ended with the weakest job growth since the global financial crisis in 2009, excluding the pandemic year of 2020. The BLS reported that the number of long-term unemployed Americans, those jobless for 27 weeks or more, rose by 397,000 over the year, reaching 1.9 million people.

Job growth decelerated significantly after President Donald Trump announced tariffs in April, contributing to the sluggish labor market.

The goods-producing sector, including manufacturing, failed to add new jobs, while health care, social assistance, and food and drinking establishments led job growth. President Donald Trump has confirmed that Diddy asked him for a presidential pardon, but made clear he does not plan to grant the request.

According to the New York Times, Trump said Diddy had submitted the pardon request "through a letter."

“He asked me for a pardon,” Trump told the outlet, adding, “Oh, would you like to see that letter?”

Despite his comments, Trump declined produce the letter.

The reported pardon request comes after Diddy was convicted in July on two federal prostitution-related charges. In October, Diddy was sentenced to 50 months in prison with a scheduled release of May 2028. Diddy was acquitted of more serious charges, including s*x trafficking and racketeering conspiracy.

Speculation has mounted for months over whether Trump would consider clemency for the Bad Boy Records founder. In May 2025, Trump said publicly that he would “look at the facts” if a pardon request were made, regardless of personal feelings.

However, Trump has since emphasized that his relationship with Diddy deteriorated after he entered politics.

“I got along with him great,” Trump said previously. “But when I ran for office, he was very hostile. … He made some terrible statements.”

"We’re human beings,” the president added. “We don’t like to have things cloud our judgment … but it makes it more difficult.”
