For the first time in Space Shuttle history, a fully stacked Shuttle - Atlantis - moves into high bay 2, on the west side of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The VAB and nearby rock-paved crawlerway have recently undergone major modifications to provide Shuttle fliglht hardware more storage space and protection - "Safe Haven" - from hurricanes or tropical storms. Atlantis begain moving out of VAB high bay 1 on the east side at 2:59 a.m. EDT. After the successful "Safe Haven" fit check, Shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to roll out to Launch Pad 39B in preparation for the STS-106 launch on Sept. 8. Photo credit: NASA. 2000-08-13

In 2010, divers stumbled upon a 19th-century shipwreckā€”not gold, but 168 bottles of champagneā€¦ and some initially tasted like wet hair.

This remarkable find occurred in the Baltic Sea, near Finlandā€™s ƅland archipelago, from a vessel that likely sank around 1852.

Inside the wreck, preserved for nearly 170 years, lay bottles from esteemed houses like V***e Clicquot, Juglar, and what was believed to be Louis Roederer, identified by their cork markings.

The occasion marked the tasting of the oldest champagne known to man. Early sips were surprising, with notes described as ā€œwet hair,ā€ ā€œanimal,ā€ and even ā€œcheese.ā€ šŸ¾

However, after the champagne was allowed to breathe, its character transformed, revealing more pleasant smoky, spicy, and floral aromas.

The incredible preservation was due to the Balticā€™s cold, dark, and high-pressure environment at the seabed, essentially acting as a natural cellar. šŸŒŠ

There was some speculation that this valuable cargo might have been destined for the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, given that Roederer was a known supplier to the Russian Imperial Court, though definitive proof is lacking.

In 2012, a selection of these historic bottles went to auction, with eleven of them fetching a total of $156,000, but their true value lies in insights into mid-19th century winemaking. šŸ’°

Just a short distance from the Tower of London stands a small circular building that marks the site of the Tower Subway, a forgotten chapter in Londonā€™s transport history. This early underground tunnel, opened in the 1870s, briefly carried passengers beneath the River Thames, offering a novel and pioneering way to cross the river during the Victorian era. Though the original subway only operated for a short time, its northern entrance has been reconstructed in the 20th century as a tribute to this innovative engineering feat.

The Tower Subway was an ambitious project, showcasing early attempts at underground transit in London before the development of the famous London Underground system. Despite its promise, the subway struggled financially and operationally, leading to its closure by 1898, just over 20 years after it first opened. The company behind the subway formally applied for dissolution in 1897, marking the end of its role as a passenger transport route.

After its closure, the tunnel was sold for Ā£3,000 to the London Hydraulic Power Company, which repurposed it for carrying power mains beneath the Thames. While the Tower Subway itself faded into obscurity, the surviving building and its story stand as a reminder of Londonā€™s continuous innovation in transportation and infrastructure during the industrial age.
