Red Hot is a not-for-profit, 501(c) 3 organization dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS through pop culture. Its mission is to raise awareness and money towards the AIDS crisis and related health issues. It was started in 1990 by Leigh Blake and John Carlin with the Cole Porter tribute album Red Hot + Blue, which raised millions of dollars, contributing to reducing the stigma around HIV/AIDS. Most notably at this time, Red Hot supported organizations and efforts such as ACT UP and T.A.G., which fought for the development and access to HIV/AIDS medication, helping those with AIDS to survive. Over the past 25 years, over 500 artists, producers and directors have contributed to 20 compilation albums of original music, videos, events and media to raise awareness and raise millions to HIV/AIDS-focused organizations around the world. Success spawned a series of albums and videos featuring a range of musical styles including Hip Hop, Dance, Latin, Country, Rock, and Brazilian, as well as continuing to pay tribute to great songwriters such as Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Tom Jobim, Fela Kuti, and Arthur Russell.

Mission: Red Hot is a not for profit production company that has produced 20 albums and dedicated more than 10 million dollars to worthy organizations, causes and pro-social projects around the world. Our mission is to raise awareness and money to fight AIDS/HIV and related health and social issues. Red Hot is more of a creative production company than a traditional charitable organization. We keep our overhead to a minimum and focus on making innovative projects that target hard to reach audiences by using popular culture and artful propaganda. Revenues from these projects are given to traditional charities, often in collaboration with the artists who have contributed their music or art.

30 years ago, we had a mission and you joined us. We’re still here, but painfully so many of our friends, lovers, and neighbors aren’t here to celebrate with us. We celebrate them. December 1 is World AIDS Day. It’s also the 30th anniversary of “Red Hot + Blue,” which was our attempt to bring about more HIV awareness, more art, more compassion, more knowledge, less stigma, less misunderstanding, and less hate. Hopefully, we’ve come close. And we are not finished. We are continuing our mission with renewed fervor. We commemorate today with the re-release of what started us on this three decade-long journey, “Red Hot + Blue.” #worldaidsday #fightaids #endaids #safesexishotsex #redhot #redhotorganization #lovewins #AIDS #coleporter #AIDSactivism #silenceequalsdeath

#tbt This is a photo of Clean Needles Now committee members Neil Klasky & Steven Corbin helping an exchange client, circa 1992. Clean Needles Now (CNN) was a harm reduction org based in Los Angeles. They were centering drug user health from way back with nonjudgmental syringe exchanges. When we were working on “No Alternative” in 1993, we asked featured musicians where they’d like to send sales proceeds. The Beastie Boys suggested Clean Needles Now. We have supported harm reduction from its earliest days -- dating back to "Red Hot + Blue." Most recently, Red Hot teamed with Open Society Foundations in focusing efforts for harm reduction in North Carolina. A s/o to North Carolina Harm Reduction, Making Whole North Carolina Urban Survivors, and The Steady Collective. We know harm reduction saves lives. Election Day 2020 brought about a sweeping victory for drug decriminalization. Arizona, Montana, New Jersey and South Dakota voted to decriminalize recreational marijuana, while Washington, DC decriminalized psychedelic plants. Oregon became the first state to decriminalize all illegal drugs. The legacy lives on, and the work continues. #redhot30 #redhotandyoudontstop

Today, Bono is one of the most well-known AIDS advocates in the world. When U2 recorded "Night and Day" for the "Red Hot + Blue" album, this was considered Bono's formal introduction to HIV/AIDS. He has since gone on to became co-founder of (RED), an entity working with partnerships to raise money for HIV-related philanthropy. To date, (RED) has generated more than $465 million for HIV treatment and prevention in Africa through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. His advocacy has been tremendous and his impact continues to keep HIV as a focus on the world stage. #redhotandyoudontstop

Here's a little history lesson for the day:
"Red Hot + Blue" pays homage to two people who were instrumental in shaping American music: Cole Porter and Dewey Phillips. Cole Porter, the famed Broadway composer and Tony Award winner, seemed to be forgotten in contemporary pop culture conversations. His first musical in 1936 was titled "Red, Hot and Blue." Porter was gay but closeted, so many of his songs had coded romantic messages; something that could still resonate in the late '80s, early '90s. Dewey Phillips was a legendary DJ of a 1950s integrated Memphis radio broadcast for WHBQ. His show was called "Red, Hot & Blue." The Red Hot co-founders had a bright idea: get the hottest artists of the day to remake Cole Porter's songs with a 1990 edge. Finally, "Red Hot + Blue" was born, the first of 20-plus albums Red Hot has released -- all sharing the same mission: Celebrate the universal language of music while raising HIV awareness and funds for HIV efforts without compromising any of these components.

#tbt ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) is considered the poster child for AIDS activism. As an international political group with many chapters, they used strategies from the Civil Rights Movement and gay and women's liberation. ACT UP protested at Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center, the Burroughs Wellcome pharmaceutical headquarters, the New York Stock Exchange floor, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) offices.

One event in particular is remembered as "Storm The NIH," when about 1,000 protestors came to NIH in May 1990. ACT UP demanded AIDS treatment options focusing on opportunistic infections and increased participation of women and people of color in clinical trials. Peter Staley, an ACT UP alum, credits Red Hot for funding "Storm The NIH.”

Red Hot donated about $1 million to ACT UP in the early '90s and has continued to donate proceeds to grassroots organizations around the world. Essentially, if you bought "Red Hot + Blue" or any of our 20+ albums over the years, you helped us support the people fulfilling their mission in saving lives. Thank you.

In June 2019, we met the Marriage Equality Coalition Taiwan ( @婚姻平權大平台 ) during their visit to New York for Pride Week. Their efforts in facilitating the passing of the Marriage Equality bill in Taiwan inspired us. As a result, we started to produce our first Taiwanese indie-pop EP, NO FEAR IN LOVE, in the hope of celebrating the human rights milestone and to further advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in Asia.

This project also reminds us of Red Hot's roots in fighting global pandemic since 1990 and supporting LGBTQ+ partners' rights in critical moments like this.

We are happy to announce the project is going to be out on May 24th to celebrate the 1st anniversary for Taiwan's Marriage Equality bill.

We have more exciting announcements coming. Please stay tuned.

This #WorldAidsDay we look back at our history of music and activism built to support the end of this #epidemic. From Red Hot and Blue to our upcoming project No Fear In Love, we are still doing what we can to cross boundaries, educate and provide to orgs that need it. As our founder John Carlin says, “we were built to go out of business”; & yet here we are as there is still so much work to be done! Our history is also summed up in a wonderful article by TheBody. Have a little read! Thank you Stephen Hicks ❤️

Today, #RiseUpOct8 is an important day for #WorkersRights & #EmploymentDiscrimination in the #LGBTQ community. Important rights are currently being attacked and could detrimentally affect all #LGBTQ people in the US.

“They keep us in a place- the #government, the #media, they keep us safe thinking certain things and in the meanwhile we are loosing generations of people. I really think that it’s a design to keep us dying, as opposed to helping us perpetuate our lives.” Featuring @thelastpoetsnyc from
#StolenMoments, the #RedHotCool documentary.

It is so important to take a stand as allies! Make your thoughts known and speak out in support of our 🏳️‍🌈 family. Who you love shouldn't stop you from a job & career, but it might. In solidarity with those standing outside the hall in #DC, we stand with you. Tell #SCOTUS it must affirm protections for #LGBTQ people under federal law once and for all using your voice on all social platforms!

"Altitude Express Inc. v. Zarda, Bostock v. Clayton County, and R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes v. EEOC are cases about whether the existing federal ban on #sex discrimination forbids #employment discrimination against #LGBTQ #workers. Zarda and Bostock involve two gay men who allege they were fired because of their sexual orientation. Harris Funeral Homes involves Aimee Stephens, a trans woman who was fired by a boss who claims that he would violate “God’s commands” if he allowed Stephens “to deny [her] sex while acting as a representative of [the] organization.”" via Vox

“The media made HIV or AIDS a gay disease, a gay epidemic, a gay cancer, all these different terms. And gay in the black community or in the minority communities is just something that is detrimental to them,
they think it’s detrimental to their upliftment”

A truly powerful statement from the Stolen Moments documentary. Have conversations within minority’s groups progressed out of this mindset from 1994 to now? Has the influence of TV shows like @poseonfx changed the conversation?
