“The media made HIV or AIDS a gay disease, a gay epidemic, a gay cancer, all these different terms. And gay in the black community or in the minority communities is just something that is detrimental to them,
they think it’s detrimental to their upliftment”
•
A truly powerful statement from the Stolen Moments documentary. Have conversations within minority’s groups progressed out of this mindset from 1994 to now? Has the influence of TV shows like @poseonfx changed the conversation?

Truer words were ne’er spoken. “We have been socialised into a way of looking at the world that associates difference with #degradation, rather than understanding Difference for a Difference. They are using it as a basis of degrading people and creating hierarchies. We see it across the globe: in race, in class, in region and in sexuality.” Cornel from the Stolen Moments documentary. It’s so important to remember this, especially on LGBT History Month! Keep up with more snippets from our Stolen Moments documentary

Well said @sad13 aka Speedy Ortiz! Working with the @harmreductioncoalition as well as carrying nasal naloxone behind their merch table since early 2019. In @nowthisnews they talked more about the active steps they’re taking to help in harm reduction! What other artists do you know working with this cause?
in late june @kcybyczk of HRC came to one of our shows and provided anti-overdose kits and training. we spoke to @nowthisnews the morning of the show about why harm reduction is such important and life saving work. thank you so much to everyone who supports the work of HRC and other harm reduction organizations (especially those DOING the work), i am really glad we are able to help raise some money in these small ways

Jeremy French - “Making Whole is an apprenticeship program. We teach drug addicts how to build furniture. The point of it is to give people creative problems to solve and trust that the process of solving creative problems in building furniture is remarkably similar to the problem solving process that goes on in recovering from addiction. So guys come here and work along side people who are masters of craft to build furniture. We share a meal here everyday. Its a bit of a community of people, beyond just the apprentices and the makers who are here,
I trust that through creating a fertile ground for community and a fertile ground for learning that things bigger than the individual components themselves, something bigger is created as a result of that."

My name is Hillary Brown and I am the executive director of @theSteadyCollective. We are a harm reduction organization in Asheville North Carolina, we started in 2015. We do full spectrum harm reduction, meaning we do syringe access. Folks can come get new syringes from us and returned used ones. We also do a Naloxone program so folks can get Naloxone and Narcan from us for free. We gave out 2200 kits last year. We gave our about 430 the first quarter of 2019. We've 59 reverses reported in the first quarter. We do fentanyl test strips so folks can test heir drugs for the presence of fentanyl. We also teach folks about safer injecting and if people want to be referred to treatment and detox, we do that too. We do minor wound care on sight and if it's beyond our capacity we refer folks to medical treatment.
Love Is The Drug: The Steady Collective on Human Rights
"Harm Reduction saves lives and keeps people safe. Just like firemen, police and EMTs. They deserve the same respect as any other professionals who devote themselves to people's safety, because it's really no different. Harm Reduction workers just happen to focus on people who use substances." Hillary Brown, Director of The Steady Collective works in Asheville, NC. We recently met with her and learned about The Steady Collective's work: the triumphs and challenges they face in doing their work. With #Asheville trying to zone them out of existence, they've been working even harder to provide for their communities. Fortunately, they won that battle! #LoveistheDrug is shining a light on #harmreduction because it's scietifically proven! It's time we let go of all the stigmas we have about substance use, substance users and the people who work with them.

- It’s still shocking sometimes when you hear things that people do say and think. It’s disheartening sometimes.
- We’ve never been as obligated to do so frank about sex as we are now because of AIDS.
- I’m hoping that none of us should have to have somebody close die before we understand.
- It’s very saddening that, because of a disease, people can disappear all of a sudden.

“I grew up in a house where there was a lot of #Jazz playing, because my dad was a Jazz #musician. One of the things that he loved was that whole move of #BossaNova into #American Jazz in the late 50s and 60s." - @benwatt . “It's a song we've known for a long time anyway and about four years ago, we were due for a gig in #Portugal so we decided I learn the words... so we could do a big encore. I spent ages learning the lyrics... and the gig got cancelled! When Red Hot and Rio people approached us we thought this is it, the perfect opportunity.” - @traceythorn
I’ve been listening to Brazilian Jazz music, in particular the songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim, for about ten years now. I probably didn’t have the confidence to put them in earlier work, but the more you listen to things and allow them to drift into the work you do…” - @georgemofficial on the Red Hot and Rio album. Happy Birthday to George Michael, the absolute legend! May he rest in peace (b.1963 - d. Dec 25 2016)
“I think the whole issue of the #record is interesting to me who recently has #suffered from an #illness that has very much to do with my #immunesystem. I’ve had a very rare illness, which nearly killed me, to do with a hypersensitivity to the immune system. I’m very much aware the power of the immune system, it can both protect you and destroy you. I just feel that #AIDS is part of a larger picture that we are coming to terms with now. The immune system is presenting us a #society with a much wider range of interconnected illnesses and doctors don't know why it's showing itself but it's definitely what we are seeing.” - @BenWatt, Corcovado from the song Everything But The Girl on Red Hot and Rio capturing the essence of our mission!

“In many cases musicians get involved in a cause/project like this is maybe because he government is stepping too lightly, moving too cautiously and we feel like something has to get done right now... There is no time to wait, not time to think about ‘should we be afraid what the church might say...what the religious right might say. No! You have to tell people right away, you have to save their lives!” - @davidbyrneofficial
Happy #PRIDE! We’re continuing our #celebration with our seventh #compilation #album Red Hot + #Rio! It began a number of projects focused on the #music and #culture of #SouthAmerica as well as to raise money and awareness to fight the #HIV/AIDS #epidemic in that part of the world. The success of the album came from a balance between the classic songs of #TomJobim and infectious #BossaNova grooves with #modern #electronic music.

“I’m 23 years old and I’m HIV+. My story really begins when I was 18, a senior in high school, and I started dating a guy named Tad. We waited a few months to have sex… initially we used condoms then I decided to go on the pill. When I was a sophomore, when I was 19, I received a phone call from Tad saying he was just diagnosed with aids. That was the biggest shock I’ve ever had.” - Beatrice. AIDS has a face. Red Hot and Blue (1990) Red Hot Compilation Benefit Album for AIDS/HIV
In celebration of our #DEBUT project RED HOT + BLUE, a #contemporary #tribute to the great #20thCentury #American #songwriter Cole Porter, we have teamed up with artist and Red Hot contributor William to illuminate art and history in the making! It was one of the ~first successful tribute albums~ and a landmark multimedia project, with contributions from #filmmakers, #artists and #designers in addition to #musicians!
The money raised went to several #groundbreaking #AIDS and #HIV organizations, notably ACT UP New York and Treatment Action Group (TAG) who mark 25 years of activism in 2019! These organizations were responsible for forcing the government and pharmaceutical companies to give people access to daily HIV medication that allow their lives to continue and flourish.

From 1999 to 2016, more than 12,000 North Carolinians died from opioid-related overdoses. In 2017, drug #overdoses in #NC increased faster than every other state but ONE!
Thus we start the project #LoveIsTheDurg in the hope of shifting narratives away from the #criminalization of addiction - to seeing addiction as a mental health issue that needs treatment, #destigmatization and greater emphasis on #harmreduction practices.
Thank you Boulevards, Kooley High, Nance , Tony G. , OC from NC , @professorxbeats, @_kellykale, @itisdasanahanu for your amazing music and love 💓
