ARCHBISHOP TELEPHASE MPUNDU: A VOICE FOR RECONCILIATION OR A DEFENDER OF LUNGU?

Former Archbishop of Lusaka, His Grace Telephase Mpundu, has recently been in the spotlight, particularly following his appearance on a podcast with Emmanuel Mwamba.

During this discussion, Archbishop Mpundu expressed strong criticisms of President Hakainde Hichilema, accusing him of being unresponsive and referring to the current administration as “crooks.” These statements have raised questions about Mpundu’s role in Zambia’s political landscape.

Is he genuinely advocating for national reconciliation, or is he serving as a spokesperson for former President Edgar Lungu?

What role is Archbishop Mpundu playing in Zambia’s political discourse?
Archbishop Mpundu, a respected figure known for his contributions to faith and social issues, has now positioned himself as a vocal critic of President Hichilema.

His comments on the podcast, where he claimed that Hichilema does not listen to others and labeled the current government as dishonest, suggest a significant shift in his role.

The question arises: Is Mpundu using his platform to promote reconciliation and dialogue, or is he acting as a defender of Lungu’s administration?

How do Mpundu’s comments impact national reconciliation efforts?
In a country striving for unity and healing, the role of influential figures like Archbishop Mpundu is crucial.

While his criticisms might resonate with some, they also risk deepening political divides.

If Mpundu’s intent is to foster reconciliation, his approach might need reconsideration. Effective reconciliation requires a balanced perspective, constructive dialogue, and a focus on bridging gaps rather than highlighting conflicts.

What are the implications of his comments on the relationship between Lungu and Hichilema?
Mpundu’s comments could potentially exacerbate tensions between Lungu and Hichilema, diverting attention from critical national issues and focusing it on personal and political grievances.

The public’s perception of Mpundu as either a mediator or a partisan advocate will significantly influence how his statements are received.

The real question is whether his role will contribute to constructive engagement or further entrench existing divisions.

Leaving it to the readers, we ask:

- Is Archbishop Mpundu’s criticism of President Hichilema aligned with efforts to promote national reconciliation, or does it serve as a defense of Edgar Lungu’s past administration?

- How can influential figures like Mpundu contribute positively to Zambia’s political discourse while navigating their own political biases?

- What role should faith leaders play in bridging political divides and promoting unity in Zambia’s current political climate?

As Zambia continues to grapple with political and social challenges, the influence of prominent figures like Archbishop Mpundu remains significant. Whether he is advocating for true reconciliation or defending political interests, his impact on Zambia’s political discourse will be closely watched.

The Fear of the Unknown

In a prison in Malaysia, there was a man locked away in a dark, cold cell. One day, the prison authorities came in and pointed at him, saying, “Tonight, you are free.

You can leave.” The man was astonished and asked, “Am I really free? Why me?”

The authorities explained that they would be executing all the prisoners the next day, but this man was chosen to leave because he had a chance to escape the fate of the others. They opened the cell door and the main door to the outside. They told him, “You are free. You can walk out.”

As the authorities left, the man’s friend, who was still in the cell, warned him, “Don’t go out. They will kill you if you do.” Despite the warning, the man hesitated. He thought, “If I leave, they might kill me. It might be safer to stay here.”

In the morning, the authorities came back and found him still in his cell. They executed him as planned. When asked why he chose to stay, the authorities said, “We offered him freedom, but the fear of the unknown kept him here.”

SMOOTH TALK, EMPTY HANDS OUR POLITICIANS

It was a sunny afternoon when the candidate for the upcoming election, Mr. Mwansa, visited our village. Nish ndesukusa mukanwa nakamunwe (I was brushing my teeth with my finger) when I heard the commotion outside.

I quickly finished up and went to see what was happening. The villagers had gathered to hear Mr. Mwansa speak.

Mr. Mwansa was charismatic, his words flowing smoothly as he promised a brighter future.

I will bring development to every corner of this village,” he declared confidently, “new schools, better healthcare, and jobs for all!” His promises were bold and convincing.

Awe mwandi,(Oh my,) seemed to be his catchphrase, adding a local touch to his speech.

As he spoke, I noticed the excitement in the crowd. But I couldn’t ignore the nagging doubt in the back of my mind. Jebele (Gosh), he sounds too good to be true. After all, we’ve heard similar promises before.

A few months after Mr. Mwansa won the election, I walked through the village, expecting to see changes.

but the promised developments were nowhere to be seen. The roads were still rough, the schools unchanged, and the healthcare services still inadequate.

I decided to visit Mr. Mwansa’s office to ask about the promised improvements.

When I got there, I found him busy with paperwork but very polite. He assured me that the changes were coming soon.

However, as I left, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of disappointment. Twalafwa (We’re dead) seemed to be the sentiment echoing in my mind.

In the end, it was clear that Mr. Mwansa’s promises were nothing more than smooth talk with empty hands. Twalishibe (We know) now that words alone won’t bring the change we need. Next time, I’ll be more cautious before believing in grand promises.
