Vital Voice Training

Vital Voice Training OWN your right to speak with powerful voice and communication coaching. www.vitalvoicetraining.com Why is your voice important?

Your voice is a fundamental part of how you express your value and values. It’s how you connect with other people. It makes the statement of who you are and who you want to be. If you want the world to know the formidable things you have to offer, then you need to be able to communicate with ease, savvy, and style. If you are getting feedback about vocal fry and upspeak – if you are sick of being

interrupted or told to “speak up” – if you would LOVE to share your vision and ideas with a huge audience, but feel petrified at the thought of speaking in front of a crowd –

This is what we do. We don’t deal in slapdash fixes (because you’re not broken)–we work with the person in front of us to develop individual solutions. Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, quiet or loud, shy or outgoing, we’ll start from where you are. The result is YOUR voice: amplified (not just louder). Through private coaching, group seminars and workshops, and content here on vitalvoicetraining.com, we want to help you do just that–be heard. To learn how to be true to you—and still get what you need. To access ease, poise, and power when you need it.

It’s our 9th birthday, and we’re feeling all the feelings . . .

🥹 Grateful for all of the friends we’ve made, supporters we’ve gained, and community we’ve built along the way.

🤬 Angry that people are STILL saying a whole lot of the same crap about women’s voices that inspired the beginning of our journey during the Great Moral Panic Over Vocal Fry of 2014.

🤣 Keeping our sense of humor intact as we CONTINUE to learn this whole “running a business” thing. It’s hard, yo . . . but it’s worth it.

😍 Awed and inspired by our incredible clients and the folks we get to interact with.

🤩 Thinking BIGGER, for our lives, our work, and our clients. After all, the next one is 10! We’re dreaming and scheming, y’all.

🥳 Celebrating the journey, the joys, the bumps, and what’s still ahead!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for being part of our journey!

Do you need “executive presence” to be seen as a leader? Ohhhhhh boy, we have thoughts.

Basically, it boils down to this: most of the time, executive presence is a crusty, ill-fitting costume of “Business Person” (but let’s be real, it’s more like “Business Dude”) that’s not serving any of us very well.

What does it mean to communicate as a leader? As the most confident, vibrant, present, engaged, ready to respond with all of your experience and ideas version of yourself?

We want to explore that with you and a small group of incredible humans, and build the future of leadership TOGETHER.

It’s our “take up space” rallying cry and the secret to gravitas.

Why? Guess where a whole lot of tension lives when we’re nervous, stressed, trying to please or perform, trying to prove ourselves, etc.? IN YOUR BUTT.

It’s ‘cause our nervous system wants to keep us safe, so we go into what we call “Good Girl Posture” . . . that place where we’re sort of hovering above the furniture and trying to simultaneously take up as little space as possible AND look like we’re super engaged and ready to lean in.

Instead, we dare you to let your butt be big in your chair (psssst . . . this works standing too). Feel gravity doing its job to keep you anchored and grounded. Feel yourself suddenly able to expand into a 360 degree breath. Feel the POWER inherent in rejecting the idea that’s drummed into us as women from birth: that to be worth anything, you must take up as little space as possible.

Want to learn more concrete ways to take up space and access your most confident, powerful voice? Find out more about our signature small group mastermind course, POWER PLAY, at the link in our bio!

We co-sign this message. Rage is an appropriate reaction to what’s happening.

Many of us can feel a fight or flight reaction to our OWN rage. Learning to hold big emotions is in fact a skill.

Repost from

Feel this rage. Honor this rage. Where is the rage in your body? Place your hand there. Breathe into it. Where does it want to go? For me, a torrent of tears. Today is the day to feel it and move it — talk it, scream it, wail it, sing it. Your rage is loaded with information and energy (Audre Lorde). Together we are going to alchemize this rage into a force the world has not seen. Go gentle, my love. Today we breathe, tomorrow we push.

Feel your feelings right now. It’s the best way to prepare for action. We stand in solidarity and are sending so much love to all those whose lives will be impacted immediately by this clueless, ignorant, and dangerous decision.

This week, we’re re-releasing one of our top episodes from season one with the phenomenal , where we talk about the difference between being nice and being a people-pleaser, how to take care of yourself as a founder, and the importance of building strong relationships.

Fran just released her second book, EMBRACE THE WORK, LOVE YOUR CAREER, and we are such humongous fans of her warmth and wisdom around building a sustainable, fulfilling journey through the work world!

Also, in this episode, we end with a mini-lesson in “embracing your too’s” — how to examine and play with the feedback we internalize when people say we’re “too quiet/too loud/too aggressive/too emotional/too MUCH”.

We hope you’ll check it out!

As we go out into an uncertain world that is in no way a return to “normal” we see many opportunities for a little grace and self compassion for all of us right now.

We are re-releasing one of our favorite conversations from our first season for a little direction, validation, and inspiration.

Julie and Casey head out to Oakland to sit down with Maya Borgueta founder of Stella Nova Psychology — they dive into emotional labor, how diversity movements in the workplace might be set up to fail, imposter syndrome, self-care, Chopin, and why beating yourself up is NOT, in fact, the secret to productivity.

TOP TAKEAWAYS:

🤗Define your core values — both general and for communication — to give your life a north star. They should be a little aspirational, and you won’t nail it 100% of the time.

🤗Imposter syndrome is pervasive, and connected to some really unhelpful ideas about what “confidence” looks like. You don’t have to feel like a Boss Bitch 100% of the time — and if you do, maybe you aren’t being very self-reflective.

🤗Research says that people who are self-compassionate get more done and are more able to problem-solve than people who are self-critical . . . which might seem obvious, but is really hard in practice, especially for high achievers.

New episode of VOICE(is), with powerhouse !

Julie and Casey sit down with Ann Shoket, founder of New Power Media and owner of , to talk about her journey from editor of Seventeen to author to community builder, why millennial women revolutionized the workplace and the world, redefining polish, and building communities that help women of all ages achieve and succeed.

TOP TAKEAWAYS:

⭐️As the Editor of Seventeen Magazine in the early 2000’s, Ann witnessed a sea change in what young women wanted to talk about — suddenly instead of advice about summer dating, they wanted advice about summer internships. It’s no surprise, really. Teen girls are natural innovators, and millennial women changed everything about how we work. (Watch Ann’s TED talk here.) https://www.ted.com/talks/ann_shoket_why_we_should_all_be_more_millennial

⭐️New power can’t just LOOK different (as in seeing more non-white, non-male people having it) . . . it must BE different. New power is diverse, transparent, inclusive, accountable, and collaborative.

⭐️We all have a part to play in changing the “women just don’t support other women” narrative. Challenging our own beliefs about scarcity of opportunity and seeing other women as opportunities to learn and grow instead of a threat is a start. And, you have to show up for other people if you want them to show up for you.

⭐️Mini-lesson: Taking your time space.

03/27/2022

Julie and Casey sit down with disability advocate Emily Ladau to talk her new book, being a full human and not just a disability, and how we can be better supporters and allies. Along the way, they discuss high school theater nerdery and embracing your inner peacock.

TOP TAKEAWAYS

🎤As we talk about disability, it’s important to acknowledge the WHOLE human, not just the parts that convenient for your narrative.

🎤There is a difference between being noticed and being seen — being noticed is about them, being seen is about you.

🎤Before deciding to help, figure out if your help is wanted or needed from the actual individual you wish to help.  Making assumptions about what someone needs (even if well intended) dehumanizes more than it helps. Let people tell you what kind of ally they need, instead of assuming your help is needed and welcome.

🦚Mini-Lesson:  Peacocking — taking the reins of your own visibility.

Episode 17 with the funny and fabulous of

Julie and Casey sit down with Lynn Harris (founder of Gold Comedy, cohost of A Bintel Brief, and prolific writer) about how comedy can change the world. Along the way, they discuss how to find your funny, why we should get rid of the term “women’s comedy”, and we discover our own personal connection to Lynn’s creation, “Breakup Girl”.

TOP TAKEAWAYS:

🎤Comedy is power: when you make people laugh you make people listen.

🎤One significant theory/framework for comedy is “disturbing a norm” . . . so doesn’t it make sense for people OUTSIDE of “the mythic norm” to be naturals at doing this?

🎤”Comedy isn’t rearranging the stars, it’s just seeing your own pattern.” When it comes to comedy as a coping mechanism, comedy doesn’t change what happened (or is happening) to you, but it can allow us to see the stars in a new way — our OWN way. But it’s not just the processing . . . the sharing is powerful too.

🎤Mini Lesson: In comedy, in speaking, and in life, you gotta put a stake in the ground.
