New Yorkers: We need to support our local restaurants!!

Starting Monday, New York City restaurants must verify that a customer has had at least one dose of a vaccine before entering to eat: Dining out in some places now requires proof of vaccination, putting workers in tough spots; ‘people scream at us through the phone’

Some restaurant owners checking diners’ vaccination status or a negative Covid-19 test say the practices—intended to help move beyond the pandemic—introduce new logistics.

Customers have canceled reservations and gotten angry when showing up unaware of the new rules, some owners said. Some online reviews of their restaurants now blast the new policies. Other owners say they and their staff have received anonymous threats from people who accuse them of infringing on individual freedoms and discriminating against the unvaccinated.

“People scream at us through the phone. They say racist things. It’s all about the vaccines,” said James Lim, owner of the Watson’s Counter restaurant and cafe in the Seattle suburb of Ballard, Wash.

Thousands of other U.S. restaurants soon will be joining Watson’s. Starting Monday, New York City restaurants must verify that a customer has had at least one dose of a vaccine before entering to eat, with city enforcement starting on 9/13. New Orleans also will start to impose a vaccination mandate or negative Covid-19 test for indoor dining starting Monday.

The proof-of-vaccine screening is the latest in a series of pandemic-related requirements placed on restaurants over the last 18 months.

Americans are split over needing to disclose vaccination status to dine out.

In New York City, restaurant operators are trying to determine how their workers will verify customers’ vaccination status. The city order also requires all restaurant workers to be vaccinated.

A survey of 536 consumers last month by market-research firm Datassential found diners about evenly split over whether they would comply with a proof-of-vaccination requirement at a restaurant.

Podcast Interview With Minerva Tantoco:
First CTO of NYC - embracing the startup culture.

https://youtu.be/Go8TkgQFn-g

Minerva Tantoco is currently the Chief Operating Officer of The Common's Project Foundation and was the first ever Chief Technology Officer of New York City. She has been paving a path of innovation since the beginning of her career working on artificial intelligence in the ‘80s.

As CTO of NYC, Minerva played a pivotal role in bringing technological innovation to the City. She discusses some of her favorite innovations such as the LinkNYC kiosks. Additionally, she talks about how the Internet of Things (IoT) guidelines that she helped establish in NYC are now being endorsed in 35 cities and 11 countries. These guidelines include urban elements such as smart park benches, smart waste baskets, etc. Once stand-alone elements become part of a connected system, they introduce layers of complexity like privacy policies and security policies.

Minerva is a New Yorker through and through. She discusses how growing up in the city shaped her perspective and inspired her to step into the role of NYC’s CTO.

Why I love working in NYC: NY Times Metropolitan Diary: On Madison Avenue by — Aimee Harrison: Dear Diary, The new commute started in November, a gray, sleeting month that was all the more dreary because the job in Stamford that I had enjoyed for two years had been moved to New York. I hate commuting, but when a boss who works you hard but makes you laugh asks you to try it and pays your expenses to do so, that’s just what you do. The Madison Avenue bus had a line a block long, sometimes longer, in the morning. Early on, I decided to walk the 14 blocks north rather than waiting. I’d go straight up Madison to avoid having to dodge the crowds near St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Center. One morning, I was 10 blocks into my walk when I saw a tall man striding south with a long coat draped over his shoulder. He was tan, with great posture, a serene demeanor and a couple of men who were not quite as visually impressive walking at his side. From then on, I would see him on the same block at the same time every morning. One day, he smiled at me and nodded, and I, flattered, did the same. After that, this elegant and seemingly mysterious man would repeat the smile and nod every day, and I came to count on seeing him to improve my mood every morning, which he did. I eventually left the job for one closer to home, but the image of this man stayed fresh in my mind. I had no idea who he was, but I imagined that he must be someone important because of his clothing and confident air. He was. One day, the newspaper featured photographs of people attending the opening of a museum exhibit, and there he was: Halston. #disruptivetechnologists #estherdyson #ivycohen #davidsorin #ramonawright
