“Pioneers” is the leading track from Meder’s forthcoming ecology and climate change-inspired album Rivers in the Desert. It tells the story of “pioneer species”: the initial plants and microbial life that can survive in the toughest conditions, transforming and healing soil while laying the groundwork for more fruitful species down the road. The track represents their energy, tenacity, and adaptive strategies via constantly morphing rhythmic patterns, sound design from noted electronics composer Jon Christopher Nelson, and oscillating metric modulations in the piano solo, all brought to a thrilling climax.
