Did you know that Cornrows/Braids were used to conceal messages, find family members, show escape routes and hide notes during slavery?

Cornrows/Braids are not just a hairstyle..... take a read....................

Cultural Significance
African Roots: Cornrows originated in Africa, where they were used as a form of expression, representing social status, age, and marital status. This practice was brought over by enslaved Africans.

Practical Uses
Protection: During slavery, cornrows served a practical purpose by protecting hair from damage and the harsh conditions of labor. The tight braiding helped keep hair neat and manageable.

Concealment of Items: Enslaved individuals sometimes used cornrows to hide small items, such as seeds or messages, as a way to resist and communicate covertly. Some slaves could not read but could use "cornrow" language to communicate with others. A good way to say where they were being taken or to tell where their family members were.

Resistance and Identity
Cultural Resistance: The continuation of traditional African hairstyles, including cornrows, was a form of resistance against the dehumanization of slavery. Maintaining these practices helped preserve cultural identity in the face of oppression.

Community and Solidarity: Braiding hair often served as a communal activity, fostering connections among enslaved individuals and creating a sense of solidarity.

Designers want to sell garments......

Since March I’ve sold 8 pieces of my February 2024 collection…..

Here’s what I did.

In January I did a photoshoot with a few of my most interesting pieces. I prepared to market the collection after my February showing. (I did not display the photos because I was doing a Fashion Week show.)

In March I published the photos in Fashion Avenue News, then I began my marketing campaign. I updated all of my online boutiques and DM, tagged and notified people on Social Media as well as did an eMail blast.

The sales started coming in. I had a 15 piece collection and have sold 8 pieces so far. I’m very excited about the interest in my collection and the way the sales have increased weekly. At no time did anyone ask me to lower my prices, I had one garment that sold for $500 (most of my garments start at $300). Also most buyers asked and were willing to pay for expediated shipping. I received 5 star rating so far.

I believe my collection sold because I invested in a photoshoot that showed the garments on real people. Sometimes runway shots are great for editorials, but when you want to sell, people want to SEE THE GARMENT.

The House of Sofia Couture – When we ask Models to do a photo shoot, they are happy to participate because they get results.

Here is another capture from photographer with SuperModels Sophia (purple boa) and Salma (orange Opera coat), wearing The House of Sofia Couture. The entire shoot was amazing with a Paris theme. Lunch was ordered for all involved and the photographers had 2 hours to shoot images for their own portfolios. The images will be submitted to over 30 magazines for publication.

The MUAs, were fabulous and Arianna (muapalacellc) – we had an absolute BLAST.

Sofia Davis is the Chief Executive Publisher of Fashion Avenue News, Model World Magazine and The Fashion Dynasty magazines. She is also a successful Fashion Week Show Producer. She is a graduate of The Fashion Institute of Technology. With an energy matched only by Oprah, she has created a Fashion Media Conglomerate. Sofia has loved fashion from the time she could reach the Chanel No. 5 on her mother’s dresser. Before attending FIT, she won the Uptown Saturday Night evening wear designer award with a Black Feathered “Bob Mackie” type Cocktail Dress.

Sofia noticed a need in the Fashion Industry to include models of all sizes, heights and weights, which lead her to create her own model management company. She came to the attention of a Producer from the World Famous Apollo Theater and was hired as Director of the Apollo Models. She held that title for 10 years. Every Wednesday she would provide 15 models, hair stylists, fashion designers and makeup artists. While at the Apollo she created BTE TV (Beauty Television & Entertainment). The Fashion TV show aired daily reaching an audience of approximately 350,000 viewers.

Constantly looking to improve the quality of opportunities for fashion models of all sizes, in 2011, Sofia began publishing Fashion Avenue News magazine. A GLOBAL, LUXURY BRAND, different from the rest. She would feature UNKNOWN models of all sizes on the cover and in the editorials. This was an instant hit, as local models and designers were looking for a platform. Sofia explains “I never go after the celebrity, although we have had plenty on our covers, this magazine is for the undiscovered fashion industry talent”.

With the growth of Fashion Avenue News, from 0 to 770,00 (email subscribers) 4 years later she created Model World Magazine, a publication that focuses on models and their careers, a year after that she created The Fashion Dynasty, now renamed, One of a Kind Magazine, where people can embrace their Uniqueness – a lifestyle magazine that features numerous topics and editorials.
