It's been a pleasure and honor to be the editor in chief for such a great newspaper, but sadly I am stepping down and giving up my throne. Our arts editor, Julian Rivas, will be replacing me. He has been with the Envoy for quite some time, and I am confident he will continue to deliver and do great things for the Hunter Envoy. Check out our last issue for the semester later this week, and look for my editorial piece about my experience for the past three semesters as your editor.

Yours truly,

Jenady Garshofsky

Last year, on this day, NYPD and University Public Safety ejected students from the lobby of Baruch College as a public hearing took place 14 floors above. 15 students were arrested and 5 were held over night by the NYPD.

The Chancellor Matthew Goldstein to this day has neither provided an explanation of the events of Nov. 21 nor admitted that he employed the help of the NYPD to remove students from the site of a public hearing.

Kroll, a corporate investigation firm chaired by former NYPD commissioner William J Bratton, was hired to investigate the incident, however the report has not yet been released -- one year after the fact.

This Monday after the holidays, the board of trustees will once again be meeting at Baruch.

Do you all do news stories about Hunter students? If so I have a good one for you. :)
Hey does anyone know where I can find old issues from 2009-2010? Especially the arts section?
So ... what's happening with the Envoy?

Did it publish this semester, 2015? Is its page dead, dead, dead. As one who many years ago help the publication to start publishing regularly after many years of fractured publishing [David Chiu where are you?] and then see that work destroyed by those thugs in SLAM, with help from Colleagues, and then, despite helping again as a member of the College Association, and watching The Hunter Administration weighing in behind the scenes, I think that's a fair question, repeated one more time in this long passage, So ... what's happening with the Envoy.
I'm curious ... does Hunter College have control over what is printed, or is the Envoy allowed to speak freely? Thanks.

An Open Letter to Editors and Writers at The Envoy

The Hunter College student newspaper, The Envoy, deserves our special recognition for its clear, honest reporting of student protests at CUNY. Its front page coverage of the recent demonstrations protesting the appointment of General David Petraeus to teach in the Macauley Honors program helped bring to the attention of the Hunter community critically important issues -- the academic mission of the university, the rights of free speech for faculty and students, and the protection of academic freedoms. This comes at a time when the CUNY central administration is considering a sweeping policy that would control and curtail free speech on all campuses and limit demonstrations by students and faculty. The Envoy’s coverage also highlights the hypocrisy and danger behind the administration’s reaction to the demonstrations against Petraeus, which was to try to silence these voices instead of listening to them.

When it came to the recent arrest of student protesters at City College, The Envoy’s excellent front-page reporting was complete, fair and fearless. At the same time that City College was moving to have students arrested and suspended, The Envoy let them tell their stories. It is noteworthy that The Envoy, in this case and others, has understood its mission as much more than that of an in-house organ for news and views about Hunter. Hunter is a member of the CUNY community and everyone in the Hunter community is also connected to the larger New York community. The Envoy’s critical coverage of NYPD spying on Muslim students, and its coverage of Occupy Wall Street, also showed how the paper’s staff is conscious of these connections.

The Envoy covered a CUNY Board of Trustees public hearing at Baruch College in 2011, at which faculty and students protested tuition increases. At that hearing Envoy reporter Tiffany Huan was violently attacked and arrested by security personnel. Jenady Garshofsky, then Editor-in-Chief, wrote in an editorial, “There is something profoundly beautiful about witnessing thousands of students peacefully protesting on behalf of education.”

This so well expresses the sentiment of many faculty, administrators and students. Their voices are expressed with great love and commitment for the institution whose trustees refuse to listen and instead encircle themselves in their bunkers.
