Story Time…

When I first stepped into the world of self-publishing, I thought it would be a breeze.

I had poured my heart and soul into my book and couldn’t wait to share it with the world. But things didn’t go as planned.

My marketing strategy flopped. Sales were almost non-existent. I felt like a complete failure.

After all the time, energy, and love I put into my dream, watching it fall flat was heartbreaking.

But I didn’t quit.

I kept showing up. I reworked my strategy, learned from every mistake, and gave myself permission to grow through the process.

And guess what? Things started to shift. My book gained traction. My efforts started to pay off. I began to see the success I once only dreamed of.

Lesson learned?
Failure isn’t final. It’s just a part of the process.

Do you ever sit down to write, only to find yourself staring at a blank screen with no idea where to start?

Writer's block can be frustrating, but it happens to the best of us.

Here are some tips that have helped me overcome writer's block:

1. Take a break. Sometimes stepping away from the computer and doing something else for a little while can help clear your mind.

2. Change your environment. Switch up your surroundings, whether that means going to a different room or working from a coffee shop.

3. Write something else. If you're struggling with a particular piece, try writing something completely different to get your creativity flowing again.

4. Make an outline. Having a roadmap can help break down the writing process into manageable steps.

5. Don't be too hard on yourself. Remember that writer's block is normal and doesn't mean you're a bad writer. Be kind to yourself and give yourself time.

Before you put pen to paper, pause and ask yourself—who are you truly writing for?

Understanding your reader on a deeper level isn’t just strategy, it’s a form of service. When you know their heart, their struggles, and their dreams, your message will meet them exactly where they are.

Here are a few soul-searching questions to help guide you:

a. What is the age range of the person who needs your message the most? Think about what stage of life they’re in and what they may be searching for.

b. Is your ideal reader a woman holding it all together? A man trying to find his way? Someone whose story mirrors yours?

c. What kind of work do they do—and more importantly, what are they working through in their personal or professional life?

d. What level of education have they reached—and how much are they still yearning to learn and grow?

e. Are they single and searching, married with children, or perhaps navigating life after loss or change?

These insights will not only shape your message, but position you to become a more purposeful and profitable author.
