Welcome to Bedford! About an hour North of New York City, this charming Westchester enclave is a quintessential New England town. We had the pleasure of meeting with a handful of its young local residents, including Kate and Gavin McLaughlin. Gavin is owner and chef of Gavin McLaughlin Events & Catering Company, a premier events and catering company based in Manhattan, with clients in New York City, New Jersey, Nantucket, Long Island and Connecticut. Kate worked for top interior design firms across the country before establishing her own practice, Kate Ives Design.
We headed to scenic and historic John Jay Homestead (currently in the process of being restored), where Kate and Gavin met us with their two young boys, Pearson and Watson, and two English Cocker Spaniels: Cricket the chestnut, and Piper the blue Rhône puppy.
Friends of John Jay Homestead, Jaclene and Benjamin “Ben” Ginnel, also joined us, along with their 12-year-old son, George. Jaclene and Ben work together at Ginnel Real Estate, a family-founded real estate firm in Northern Westchester. Jaclene and Ben are also friends of QUEST, having appeared on the June 2020 cover (during Covid!) walking with horses Joey and Zee from the Endeavor Therapeutic Horsemanship through Bedford Riding Lanes trails.
We would have been remiss to have visited Bedford without sharing in its tradition as a “horse town” and longstanding equestrian heritage. With that in mind, we visited Alex Hamer, a leading show jumper who grew up in Bedford and now runs and owns Buxton Farms Show Stables. We joined Alex for a walk with Sir George around the grounds of his family home. The newly restored 1790 schoolhouse is the oldest surviving in all of Bedford Hills and stands as a tribute to the property’s historical significance. Our day in Bedford felt complete and we can’t wait to return for another visit!

Julia Brown, Chrissy McCurdy and Joyann King Michael take Basil and Bridget for a walk at Wethersfield Estate and Garden… Outtakes from yesterday’s QUEST OCTOBER 2025 SHOOT in Millbrook and Beford, NY!

First stop was The Thorne Center, being planned as a community hub and cultural center that will provide programs for film, technology, culinary arts, education and more. It is located in the historic Thorne Center, a landmark building gifted to the village in 1895.

We then made our way to Wethersfield Estate and Garden, which came to life in 1937 thanks to the vision of Chauncy Stillman (November 9, 1907 – January 24, 1989). The businessman, philanthropist, art collector and conservationist was also an avid equestrian who discovered the beauty of rural Dutchess County while riding through the Millbrook Hunt. He created Wethersfield by purchasing two farms in Amenia, New York, and naming them after his family’s first home in America from 1705, Wethersfield, Connecticut. In alignment with Chauncy Stillman’s original vision, Wethersfield still incorporates more than 20 miles of horse trails in and around its grounds for public enjoyment.

Next up we headed to Bedford, New York, where we visited Alex Hamer, a leading show jumper who owns and runs Buxton Farms and Show Stables. We joined Alex at his magnificent barn and stable for a walk with gentle George the horse, who could not have been sweeter. Like Alex, George is handsome and humble (and also hilarious). George’s pal, Blue, a white horse, peeked out of the barn to say, “Hello” and share a noze-nuzzle with George.

Our final destination was John Jay Homestead State Historic Site, once home to John Jay Homestead. With it’s rolling hills, majestic barns and remarkable gardens, as well as John Jay’s restored Federal-style house, the site was picturesque on a cloudless day, to say the least.  We can see why—after 27 years of service to his state and nation—John Jay looked forward to the day when he would retire with his wife and family—as he said himself, to “the house on my farm in Westchester County.”

WOW Lilly Pulitzer! 💫🌸🦓🌴🦋🌿👒👜✔️What a special evening exploring your archive. Watercolors and original prints with names like “Tootsie” and “Clips” added unique character that brought vibrant butterflies and blooming flowers to life. We traveled back in time, with nostalgic mood boards including one of my favorite photos of Jackie Kennedy. She is seated quietly alone, sketching, during the summer of 1962 wearing a simple Lilly shift. At the time she was on a sisters’ trip with her younger sister, Princess Lee Radziwill. They were visiting Ravello, a little mountain-top town with spectacular views, perched on the Amalfi coastline.
Jackie Kennedy and Lilly Pulitzer were friends and former schoolmates at Miss Porter’s School. Knowing that is part of that Lilly Pulitzer’s origin story makes the dresses more fun. To recap: as young, lovely and entrepreneurial-minded Lilly Pulitzer attempted to market fresh orange juice with fruit from her husband’s Floridian citrus groves, she struggled with juice spilling on her clothes. She began creating colorful dresses to wear while working in the groves to hide stains. Simple shifts in vibrant patterns that were practical and attractive. When her former classmate, Jackie Kennedy, appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine wearing the Lilly Shift in 1962, the dresses soared from local fame into global stardom—marking Lilly Pulitzer’s journey to becoming the iconic fashion, home and accessories name that it is today.
Lilly Pulitzer has evolved over seven decades with a determined team that has kept at it—always learning while remaining close—strongly believing in their brand. The team has acquired an essential skill that may sound simple but is often anything but: “how to work well together”.
With its new archival collection and a sophisticated new logo, Lilly Pulitzer has journeyed from Palm Beach out into the world. Anyone can “shop Lilly” and find a piece among Lilly Pulitzer’s sophisticated looks and accessories to incorporate into their own wardrobe and make part of their own style. The Vintage Vault came alive in New York City and is now open for everyone!

🍃Lawn bowling at Newport Casino in 1966, photographed by Toni Frissell. Minnie Cushing, Barbara Vought and a few well-dressed friends try their hand at the precision sport enjoyed by all ages. Said to date back to ancient Egypt, the game is similar to today’s well-loved bocce, once played during the Roman Empire and later embraced by kings and queens in Great Britain.

Our Summer Issue is full of all things fresh and fun under the sun, including Barton & Gray Mariners Club’s Summer Calendar. Following Newport Folk Festival July 25th, Nantucket’s annual Opera House Cup will launch in August. 🍃At QUEST we cherish our East Coast summers, from Long Island, Newport, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard… to Maine, Millbrook, Saratoga and The Adirondacks. One Adirondack lake in particular stands out—not only for its breathtaking natural beauty, but also for its exceptionally clear, clean water. In a letter to his daughter in 1971 Thomas Jefferson famously wrote, “Lake George is without comparison, the most beautiful water I ever saw.” The Jefferson Project strives to keep it that way. Tony Hall of The Lake George Mirror explains how IBM and the LGA (Lake George Association—the world’s oldest lake conservation organization) have collaborated to apply IBM’s advanced technology to a case study focused on Lake George. The goal is to better understand the effects of human activity on fresh water in order to form a blueprint for preserving essential bodies of fresh water around the world. The project has resulted in Lake George’s nickname as “The World’s Smartest Lake”.🎓🇳🇫

Jamie MacGuire, a.k.a Audax, visits Christopher Buckley, whose father, William F. Buckley, Jr., would turn 100 this year. A new biography details the charismatic and famously conservative “Captain Crunch.” If travel overseas is more your speed, take a cue from Grace Kelly and go full glam in Monaco, or slide down a banister at Hotel Byblos in “San Trop” à la Grace Jones. For an experience with ancient ties, travel back in time to Rome’s Eternal City with Assouline’s Roma Eterna- its list of must-see landmarks and modern marvels is never ending.💫

Summer Q has arrived and we’re all in! It’s the time of the season for long days along the water and all things fun under the sun. Dive in and explore Elizabeth Quinn Brown’s tribute to Marianne Faithfull, the fresh-faced British singer-songwriter who famously dated Rolling Stone Mick Jagger and became a 1960s icon. Faithfull sings “The Ballad of Lucy Jordan” in 1991’s Thelma and Louise about a suburban housewife who dreams of adventure and freedom from daily tasks. “Lucy Jordan is me if my life had taken a different turn—if I’d become Mrs. Gene Pitney, for instance, and ended up in a big, empty house in Connecticut.”
Another fashionable rebel seen throughout the 1960s—and one still prominent today—is Manolo Blahnik. Blahnik opened his first store in London in 1973, running its operations from home with his sister, Evangelina. The legendary shoe designer’s niece, Kristina Blahnik, is now CEO and describes her childhood as “growing up in a shoebox”. With 20 flagships across the globe, Blahnik recently opened its 3rd U.S. location in Miami’s vibrant Design District. Q Contributor Elizabeth Kurpis connects with Kristina to discuss.
It would not be the first Monday in May without reigning in the annual Met Gala. Janie Pierrepont captures the scene at The Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” celebrating joy, individualism and expression through fashion. Another Jayne—ever-sunny Jayne Chase—serves up the benefits of Rande Gerber-partnered Hampton Sun SPF, while Jack Lynch shares what’s happening in Palm Beach county’s fastest growing neighborhood along North Flagler Drive.
If travel is what you seek, follow Q’s on-the-go managing editor Brooke Kelly Murray to Spain’s fabled Marbella Club. Founded in 1954 by Prince Alfonso Hohenlohe-Langenburg, the glistening Mediterranean oasis shines brighter than ever. And special thanks to creative director Tykischa Jacobs, who beautifully brings Q to life each quarter. Happy summer to all!
