Haiti has endured gang-related violence and years of political crisis. For Haitians in the U.S., reality in both countries is unstable. To better understand the story, public radio stations in the three cities with the largest Haitian populations in America — WNYC, GBH News and The World in Boston, and WLRN Public Radio and Television in Miami — are teaming up to open the phones and hear from Haitian listeners. Listen live Monday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. on 93.9 FM, AM 820 or wnyc.org. A transcript of the program translated into Haitian Creole will be made available following the broadcast.

Nightfam! In 2019, Dr. Mashudu Tshifularo achieved something extraordinary in a South African hospital – he became the first surgeon to successfully transplant 3D-printed middle ear bones!

The procedure uses 3D-printed bones instead of traditional titanium implants, making it more affordable.

-It can be performed on anyone from newborns to adults
-Thanks to endoscopic techniques, it leaves minimal scarring
-The whole surgery takes just about 2 hours!

At the University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Dr. Tshifularo didn't just innovate – he opened new possibilities for treating hearing loss. While it specifically helps certain conditions, it represents a significant step forward in medical technology.

Founded in 1959 by Dawud Hakim, Hakim's Bookstore & Gift Shop is the oldest Black-owned bookstore on the East Coast 📚The community spot has served as a key resource in West Philadelphia, providing literature that reflects the Black experience. Now, under the leadership of Hakim’s daughter, Yvonne Blake, the bookstore continues to focus on its mission.Most recently, Penn Libraries announced a partnership with the bookstore so Hakim's can help them better enhance and reflect the variety of contributions African Americans have made to the world.
