While dogs are universally celebrated for their fierce loyalty, a cat named Toldo from Italy completely shattered scientists' preconceptions about how felines grieve.
In September 2011, Renzo Iozelli, a resident of Montagnana, Italy, passed away. His three-year-old grey-and-white cat, Toldo, had been his inseparable shadow from day one. The depth of the cat's grief became painfully clear on the very day of the funeral. Toldo followed the procession of mourners and the coffin straight to the local cemetery—a place he had never been before.
The next day, when Renzo’s widow, Ada, went to visit the grave, she noticed a small fresh twig placed on the soil. That was just the beginning of a remarkable ritual. For over a year, Toldo walked to the cemetery alone every single day. And he never arrived empty-handed. He would carry small twigs, fallen leaves, colorful flowers, scraps of paper, or even discarded plastic cups in his mouth, carefully arranging them on his owner's grave.
Locals frequently witnessed Toldo sitting silently by the marble tombstone for hours, completely unfazed by freezing winter temperatures or harsh weather. This extraordinary behavior fascinated veterinary ethologists. While grieving rituals are well-documented in pack animals like dogs, such a prolonged display of profound grief and devotion from a traditionally independent creature like a cat is truly rare. 🐱❤️
