June 24, 1812: Napoleon's Invasion of Russia – A Turning Point in World History

On June 24, 1812, French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte began one of the most ambitious military campaigns in history by leading the Grande Armée across the Neman River into Russia. With more than 600,000 soldiers from across Europe, Napoleon expected a swift victory that would strengthen French dominance on the continent.

However, the Russian army avoided large-scale battles and retreated deeper into the country, destroying supplies along the way. As the French advanced, they faced severe shortages of food, disease, exhaustion, and the harsh Russian winter. Although Napoleon captured Moscow, the city was largely abandoned and set ablaze, leaving little benefit for his army.

The disastrous retreat from Russia became one of history's greatest military failures. By the end of the campaign, only a fraction of the Grande Armée returned home. The invasion weakened Napoleon's power and marked the beginning of his downfall, ultimately reshaping European history.

Today, historians remember the 1812 invasion as a powerful lesson about overconfidence, logistics, and the challenges of military conquest.

Mir i demokracija

Jednakost

Ljudska prava

Dan antifašističke borbe ostaje važan dio hrvatskog nacionalnog identiteta i povijesne baštine, podsjećajući buduće naraštaje na važnost suprotstavljanja ugnjetavanju i očuvanja slobode.
