Beyond Ambition: The Politics of Service ✍🏿
The engine that lubricates, or the oxygen that keeps any political party alive, is its ability to demonstrate that there is a reward for loyalty and a recognition of the risks that political activism carries. There has to be a defensive system that protects the veterans of the party. Seniority in a political party is not merely about age, but about length of service, commitment, personal sacrifice, and the dangers people encounter in their efforts to keep a political party and its philosophy alive.
When we analyze the three-decade journey of Rt. Hon. Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, we observe a rare example of natural institutional progression and profound political maturity. His trajectory is not the product of political shortcuts or “double-promotion” tactics; it is a 30-year masterclass in unwavering loyalty to both the State and the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP). From the grassroots of Pujehun to the strategic leadership of Parliament, and ultimately to the high diplomatic stage of the ECOWAS Speakership, Dr. Tunis has been systematically groomed by the very institutions of our Republic.
Perhaps the most telling quality of a leader is not how they grasp power, but how they relinquish it for the greater good. Chester Barnard defined organizations as cooperative systems that require a balance between individual motives and organizational goals. Dr. Tunis has embodied this balance. On multiple historic occasions, most notably regarding the positions of Leader of Government Business and Speaker of Parliament, he chose to step aside, subordinating his personal aspirations to the higher interests of party cohesion and national unity. This rare display of political selflessness is the mark of a man whose trust is not in the permanence of positions, but in the will of Allah and the eventual triumph of a united people.
This maturity is reinforced by tangible proof of concept. It is here that the philosophy of “Pre-Paid Leadership” redefines the political landscape. While the traditional approach has been to present manifestos, essentially paper promises, to a hopeful electorate, Dr. Tunis has inverted the model. Between 2020 and 2026, he has functioned as a parallel engine of national development, committing an audited US$1.44 million (over 32 billion old Leones) of his personal resources to the Sierra Leonean dream.
This is not philanthropy in the casual sense; it is the strategic lubrication of the national engine. When we see US$500,000 dedicated to tertiary education through the One Love Salone Foundation, or the US$50,000 committed to shielding our youth from the “Kush” epidemic, we see a leader who refuses to wait for the levers of state power before beginning the work of national transformation. His NLe 5 billion investment in the party’s nationwide infrastructure, ensuring functional party structures from Tonkolili to Moyamba and Bo, demonstrates a unifying spirit that protects the veterans and grassroots activists who form the heartbeat of the party.
The logic is deductive and undeniable. A leader who has spent 30 years protecting the house, and six years investing his own resources in strengthening its foundations, is a leader who possesses the ultimate electoral “insurance policy.” He offers a bridge between the old guard’s respect for seniority and the younger generation’s demand for modern, results-driven governance. Through his actions, he has demonstrated that he does not wait for power to serve; rather, he serves to demonstrate his readiness for power.
Let us, therefore, open our hearts to embrace a leadership that is seasoned by time, tested by sacrifice, and anchored in faith. Dr. Sidie Mohamed Tunis represents the dividends of our party’s past and the architect of our 2028 victory.
May the Good Lord continue to bless the Sierra Leone People’s Party, and may He continue to guide our journey toward national prosperity.
