I’m trying to stay open-minded, but this install has me puzzled. 🤔

We hired a pro, so seeing a post set in fresh concrete right next to the HVAC unit while the area around it still looks rough raises a few concerns.

Maybe there’s more cleanup and finishing to come, but at this point it doesn’t look as polished as I expected. The marks on the post and the uneven surface around the footing stand out more than I’d like.

Before I jump to conclusions, I’d love to hear from people with experience. Is this normal at this stage, or would you ask the contractor for some answers?

Looking for some honest feedback from anyone with concrete experience. 😅

We just had a new driveway poured, and the edge on one side has me second-guessing the finish. It looks a bit bowed and uneven, especially where the concrete meets the forms.

The contractor says it will look much better after the boards are removed, but I’m not sure if this is normal or something to address before final payment.

They’re coming back tomorrow, so I’d appreciate any opinions. Would this concern you, or is it too soon to judge until the forms come off?

28x30 Driveway Extension Gone Wrong?

I just had a 28x30 asphalt pad added to the end of my driveway by a contractor who was going door to door in the neighborhood.

The prep looked good: they removed the old patio, graded properly, and compacted the base. But after the asphalt went down, the finished surface has me worried.

It's still sticky days later, and there are soft spots across the pad. Before I start making calls or spending more money, I'd love to hear from folks with paving experience.

Can this be salvaged? Is sealcoating before winter a good idea, or should I focus on getting the installation evaluated first?

Neighbour wants us to leave a gap for their pipes. Is this reasonable?

We’re excavating foundations for a rear extension, and our neighbours are concerned about how close our new wall will be to their existing extension.

Their extension, built around 2012, sits about 150mm from the boundary. They have boiler and kitchen pipework along that side and are asking us to leave an 850mm gap on our side so they have roughly 1 metre of access for future maintenance.

We’ve declined, as that would seriously impact our project. My builder has suggested relocating their pipes, but that would mean extra cost, and I’m struggling to see why we should pay to fix a layout they chose years ago.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Are there any building regulations about access to external pipework in cases like this, or is maintenance access generally the property owner’s responsibility? Looking for advice on how to handle this fairly while keeping things civil.

10 Days After the Pour - Can I Still Cut My Joints?

Looking for guidance from concrete experts.

I poured a 15x24 slab 10 days ago and didn’t get around to cutting the control joints. Now I’m second-guessing it and wondering if I’ve waited too long.

I’ve heard joints should be cut soon after the pour, but I’ve also seen them cut later when prepping for coatings. Is there still value in cutting them now, or is it too late?

Looking for real-world experience from anyone who’s been in a similar situation.

Getting ready to pour this bad boy and hoping to tap the wisdom of the concrete pros out there. This will be my second time ordering and pouring concrete, so I’m feeling a little more confident, but definitely not enough to think I know everything.

Any recommendations on mix design, slump, ordering extra yardage, timing, or common mistakes to avoid? I’d rather learn from your experience than from my own expensive lessons. Any tips before the trucks start rolling?

Seeking input on a new foundation

After the pour, these lines showed up on the foundation. The builder says they’re just impressions from the forms, not cracks. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s seen this before.

Is this a typical concrete look once the forms come off, or does it need closer inspection? Would you consider this acceptable workmanship?

😳 Imagine spending over $72,500 on a custom covered deck and outdoor living area, only to wonder if the structure beneath was done right.

The end result might look stunning, but looks can be deceiving. True quality lives in the details most people never see: load paths, footing design, beam support, hardware choices, and framing connections.

Beautiful surface craftsmanship means little if the hidden structural elements are not built correctly. The most critical parts of any project are often the ones that disappear behind finishes.

Always review the work before it gets covered. That is where the real quality of the build shows.

To the neighbor who figured Saturday morning was the perfect time to kick off a full-on sewer line excavation right outside my window...

Waking up to the chorus of heavy machinery, digging, and nonstop banging was not exactly on my agenda. 😅

I get that repairs and upgrades are necessary. Still, weekends are often the one chance to sleep in, unwind, and savor a little quiet. Watching the street turn into a construction zone with equipment running continuously wasn’t part of my plan.

Maybe I’m old-school, but Saturday mornings should come with coffee and calm, not excavation.

Am I overreacting, or would this bug anyone else too?

Deck Post Spacing Issue: Looking for Solutions

My final deck inspection failed because the spacing between these railing posts exceeds the 4-inch requirement. Everything else passed, but this one issue is holding up approval.

I’m hoping to find a fix that doesn’t involve tearing apart and rebuilding the railings and stairs. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? Looking for practical ideas that would satisfy the inspector without having to start over.
