I underestimated this job. In my defence, never done it before, never seen it done before, but i didn’t seek any advice other than reading the bottle, paint stripping has defeated me! I likely didn’t use enough of the gel stripper. I’ve had a week off work, spent 9 days stripping wallpaper off every room and doing other bits, and now this 😅

How can I add a mounting surface for stringer brackets? My stringers rotted at the bottom because they were installed on the dirt before we bought the house. How can I install a stair header to properly mount my stringers? Photos show how the original owner of the house solved it. I know it's incorrect and I can't find a specific enough situation online to copy. When I just bolt on a new 2x12 piece on the outside of the rim joist and be sure it drops down enough for the stair stringer brackets to be properly attached?

Ideas on how to repair this? Considering taking on this job for a client. I know how poorly it was constructed and I think I would approach it but interested to see what others think. TIA!

Can i cut this 2x4 piece to make room for a duct? I have little knowledge of rough carpentry work so definitely need help on this one. The picture is the space between my ceiling and upstairs floor. I need to run a 7 inch round rigid duct for my kitchen range hood which is unfortunately not against an outside wall. So i will have to go up and over between the trusses. I need to go over the pipe you see at the bottom of the picture and underneath this 2x4 that is nailed perpendicular to the truss. It seems to be an 8ft long 2x4. I can't do that due to lack of clearance so i have 3 options i can think of. Relocate the drainage pipe, which would be the most invasive and would like to avoid. Consider using 3 inch tall rectangular ducting if it would clear both the pipe and the 2x4. Cut the 2x4. Is option 3 viable? Is that 2x4 important or is it some kind of brace that was put in place for construction purposes and non-structural?

Are these joist hangers too long? I OK folding the joist hangers over the top, and then again onto the face of the deck? Surely the top/ face boards will sit high or wonky? Or am I over thinking it?
